GPU Usage
« on: May 01, 2011, 05:16:32 PM »
Can anyone with a Crossfire setup take a screen shot of their GPU usage with MSI AB while running MWLL/Crysis wars please.

Ideally a 1055t and 2 5870's.

I want to see if anyone is getting high GPU usage with this game. I am getting around 50% usage or less on my cards, even when running at 6048x1080. Seems like a bottleneck to me, but I want to confirm it before I start looking into sandy bridge.

Thanks in advance guys.

Bit more info as it stands. I see Core 6 (CPU-5) taking a pounding constantly.

1980x1080 no AA - gets about 30-50 FPS

1980x1080 16xAA - no real change in FPS

6048x1080 no AA - around 20FPS with frequent lock ups under zooming

Any ideas where I am getting the drop in GPU usage. V-sync is off in all cases.

Well I do not use Afterburner. I use the AMD System Monitor utility but here is a screenshot taken just after exiting an MWLL (Mirage was the map) online game session. As you can see my GPUs are running at max utilization. The GPUs are the HD 5970 water cooled. I have flashed the VBIOS once with a slight over clock of Core 800 MHz and VRAM to1400 MHz at 1080p. I typically get an FPS range of about 30 to 60. All MWLL maps play well on my rig. My CPU is a Core i7 920 @ 3.5 GHz. When I first load Death Valley I can get some zoom stutter but that quckly goes way as the distance terrain and objects textures are converted to detail textures and then loaded into VRAM.

Thanks man. Kinda wired for me seeing Aidan reply to my post as thats my name. Looks like I am gonna be getting rid of this thuban and grabbing a sandybridge.

I wouldn't jump on last years Sandy Bridge yet when AMD's Bulldozer is about to drop.

I'm waiting still after BD before I decide on anything. As much as I love AMD, I just don't think they will pip intel's offering even with the new architecture. I would love to be surprised though and even more if the rumours of it dropping into my AM3 board are true.

Hey Bin, my dual 5770's never go over 50% usage in MWLL, I've seen them go to max in other games, just not mwll. I've seen a lot of guys report the same in many different threads on here.

As a side note, if I run MWLL windowed then only 1 gpu is used and it jumps up to close to 100%.

Then what is Aidan doing different.

Aidan , can you post up a copy of your autoexec for me to try out and I will run the amd sys tool to do an apples to apples comparison.

I run AMD System Monitor on my second monitor and I did notice that after playing a game at 50% the whole time, that as you are exiting the game, going from map to server screen to desktop the GPU's jump to almost 90% and then down to 0% when totally out of game.  If that screen shot was taken just after exiting the game that might be what we are seeing.  The graph looks just like Aidan's as I exit the game.

@Aidan, can you use the Record function in AMD System Monitor to double check your findings instead of a screen shot?  Can you run a 2nd monitor so you can check your numbers "real time".  I not saying I doubt your findings, it's just totally different then all of the other stat's I've seen.  Thanks  :)

I have already used the Record function on the AMD System Monitor utility. While actively playing in-game in the MWLL mod, the recorded data is reflecting the GPU utilization of each GPU on my HD 5970 as in the 80 to 90 percentile range. This GPU utilization is less while in the game lobby. I have already posted this data in one of the other threads dealing with this matter.

Same result running the CPU at stock.

1920x1080 no AA 2.8Ghz

One core is getting spanked as expected and I get the same performance as at 4Ghz.

Gonna be going Intel, had enough of this chip gimping me. Might as well only have one 5870 as it currently is. The second one is only giving me an extra 5-10 FPS at best.

The problem is, that mwll is not a very good benchmark for this, because mwll is currently CPU limited. It actually would give you a higher FPS increase if you overclocked your CPU. More CPU cores don't help because crysis is optimized for dual core only.
There comes a point where the talking must stop, and people have to do actual work.

I am aware of this, I am not benchmarking.

I just want the maximum performance from my rig. Overclocking the CPU from 2.8Ghz to 4.0Ghz showed negligible improvements in Crossfire scaling. I believe this to be because the 1055t is just too weak on any single core to supply my GPU's with the requested packets.

I have been looking around the internet and this seems like a common occurrence with Thuban processors running multi GPU setups playing any single/dual core intensive game, i.e MWLL

Whereas Dirt 2 for example I get 99% usage on both cards with every single setting maxed out at 1920x1080. This game spreads the load across all cores.

I have taken plenty of screenshots of my problem and will see if it is fixed when I replace my CPU with a more powerful architecture, be it Bulldozer or Sandybridge.

Intel are bringing out their new Ivy chips in about 10months, not that you can wait that long :) But ivy can use the SAME motherboards as sandy, so if you can pick up a cheap sandy package, then replace the CPU in 10months or so, and gain another 0-20% performance increase. Thats assuming intel don't delay.

Ofc they could bring ivy out sooner, but I really doubt that.

On another note, I too, only get 50% GPU usuage on my two 580GTX (At 1900x1200). MWLL and Just cause 2 being the only two games so far I've found to do this. Changing CPU speed, does NOT change nothing in this regards (As you found out too) because I tested that as well.

But hey, at least we all have some sweeeeeet FPS to look forward to when we all upgrade our CPU's lol :D

Thanks!  I wish I knew why you get such nice performance out of crossfire in MWLL.

Here is my GPU usage.

Note this is at 5760x1200, NOT 1900x1200.

Here is my GPU usage at 1900x1200. You can clearly see my GPU are now basically idle while playing MWLL. And like everyone else, my FPS is now the same as if I just used one card.
