Remember this is a MOD and NOT just a straight video game coming from a paid development studio.

BUT it's VERY much worth all the initial setup trouble  8)

I hope so :)

Ok, I feel severely stupid, but I'm going to as anyway...

I think I got it set up and done, I'm just downloading the last few patches: 0.4.4 atm... do I have to keep going until I run out of patches before I can start to try it out?  I assume yes...

Is there a main lobby of some sort I can find games in?  A quick game launch button?  Is there a single player I can check out my 'Mech options with?  My experimenting once 0.4.0 was done drew up these questions...   I've checked around for a basics guide, but that guide is probably a bit too advanced for me :P

Keep running the updater, the current version is 0.4.9 (which means you have 5 more patches to install based on the progress of your last post)

There is a main lobby reached by clicking multiplayer -> internet game

Quick game does not work

No single player yet (or currently planned)

Hope that answers your questions.

So.  I got to try it.

It doesn't feel anything like any MechWarrior game that came before it, which I must admit, has me bummed out.  I have mixed feeling about being able to switch teams and the whole cbill thing at the start where you can only afford a given 'mech at the start and your team stores a bank so you can upgrade your 'Mech at your next spawn.  I mean, it's nice to have that choice of swapping at the start, but one thing that most 'Mech games had that set them apart from most other shooters was the 'Mech customizability.  To spend hours staring at a skeleton wondering how to put what and where could set you apart from someone who just picked a boat.  Doing that in the heat of combat by purchasing weapons and 'Mechs loses something.

Collisions are rough.  I understand it's still in Beta, but that just makes it more appropriate to point out.
The map is WAY too complicated.  It feels like an arcade game more than a 'Mech game, yet the features say the opposite.  I apreciate the layer of detail, but being able to cycle through nearby enemies and seeing their icons in the corner really wasn't that bad.
The 'Mechs look FANTASTIC!  Devs really put a lot of time into the 'Mechs.  Bravo!  On the flip side, 'Mech damage leaves something to be desired.

All-in-all, I'm definately going to plug in a few more hours before I make a decision whether I like it or not, great work, and keep the updates coming!

Well you could try out the Test of Strength game mode.  Blazing Aces server runs it, in ToS you are given a set amount of c-bills for the match.  I think BA gives you 2mil or something like.

I really can't agree with your other critiques, this game takes time to get used to, but it is well worth it. :)

I suck!! But WE are AWESOME.  We started a unit.  What's that?!  YOU WANNA TOUCH MY UNIT?!! :P ^^12thVR Recruitment Page(clickthepic) ;)

MWLL is not supposed to be just a remake of the other MW games :) So yeah, it feels a lot different and needs some time to get used to if you were looking for the old school MW experience. But as people put it: This game rocks on its own :D

Keep in mind, the devs have said that they're tweaking the cbill system to address some of the concerns surrounding the system. (http://forum.mechlivinglegends.net/index.php/topic,12857.msg199696.html#msg199696) (someone correct me if they're done with tweaking this for now). It was never intended by the devs to allow the players to all start out in heavies and assaults at the beginning of a round, one of the reasons being that the games then tends to just turn into an assault slugfest. Server admins have some control over what you're given at the start, so if this type of play is what you like, you'll likely be able to find a server that supports it.

The topic of a "Mechlab" has also been discussed thoroughly by the community and devs. Currently, it seems that the devs want to implement a mechlab at some point, but considering this is a multiplayer game they want to make dang sure that they don't unbalance gameplay by doing so. You'll be able to find a couple threads about it with a little searching.

Give the game a bit of time, it'll likely grow on you. If it doesn't, at least you tried it first before making a decision, right? :)

I'll see if I can dig it out of my basement...

I don't ever remember there being so much trouble around getting a video game installed :p

I've played every MW game on or shortly after release, and most of the rest of the BT games too, and I can say that the MW franchise has been responsible for more hardware upgrades on my part than any 3 other factors combined.

Our game can be a little tricky, but that's due to it being a mod of another game, and not just any mod, but a "full conversion", where there is almost no discernible relation to our game and the game it is built on. Believe it or not, it's gotten rather easier to install and play than it was in our first beta release: you don't even want me to get started on the difficulties we had in early alpha ("Mystery folder restored", anyone? Sorry, inside joke.)

We feel it is definitely worth the effort, though, and once you get in and playing, assuming you don't have experience any problems, I expect any initial difficulties will be quickly forgotten; please remember, however, it IS a beta and neither feature complete nor remotely close to fully stable, and thus problems of various sorts are not only likely, but to be expected. We're here to help though, so please don't hesitate to post in the appropriate forums (after checking the stickied threads to make sure it isn't already addressed somewhere) if you need help or have questions.

I'd just like to say this is the first MechWarrior game where I enjoyed the multiplayer for more than 30 minutes.  :)

So yes the learning curve is high, but its a very enjoyable experience once you get the hang of it.
