what do you guys think is missing from mod?
« on: May 05, 2011, 12:46:46 PM »
I dont mean assets or game types either./  I dont even mean fixes to banking or autobalance features. I mean things that given the budget and manpower the devs would probably implement.

Personally, for me, the thing that I notice most is the movement animations. Please take all these comments with a grain of salt, its just what it "seems" to me. IIRc, before the mod came out , there was a vid of mech animations that looked well, scary bad. Very floaty, ice skating across the terrain.  In many ways it seems we are not much past that.
THis goes likewise for what the experience feels like inside the mech. TOo often floaty

Collision damage

will add more later as they come to mind

I'd personally only agree with the animations aspect, but that's due to the lack of animators on the team as I understand it and as such is understandable.  (Wow I talk a load of gibberish when I don't pay attention)

Other than that, I honestly don't feel too many things are missing other than certain assests etc.

Walking animations after jump jetting would be awsome, recoil, and knockback (Not huge but enough ) would be awsome too.

Ofc this is just me dreaming, one day maybe it will actually happen, I can wait :D

These kind of things would just be icing on the cake.

Keep up the good work devs!

Clearly the lack of Mechs and maps. Especially maps. Getting real tired of the same 5-map rotation.

Also, having clearly defined sides, particularly when it comes to available loadouts.

I second the animation part, although IIRC is wasn't necessarily a lack of animators, but more along the lines of the mech cockpits being unplayable with more of a bounce in animations.

For me specifically, I think the mod could improve the most by being more beginner friendly.  Right now new players can only get a certain amount of information to start off, and have to rely on vets to fill in the rest, which is often a lot of information.  While not suggesting a single player campaign, a scripted training level for targeting, coolant flushing, and movement could prove beneficial to at least teach all the necessary skills, before new players work on improving them.

There are several linked training videos all ready in the Wiki.  If new players don't bother to take the time to make use of this information then they deserve to learn the hard way.

But I agree that this would be nice to see once this moves out of Beta.  Even then you could have all the keys memorized and you are still going to get owned for the first week you play.  There are just too many damn good Veterans out there.   ;)

In terms of animations, yes, it is a lack of animators and time for those animators to create decent animations. Generally, they do the best they can with the skills they have and the time they're given.

In terms of maps, we've done our part (and we'll still do more), but now with the community map site and the ability to download maps from servers themselves, it's up to the community to take the custom maps to the next level.

In terms of information for newbies within the game itself, this really comes down to having more UI designers (Flash and C++) and s a 100% manpower issue. If we had more of these people (who don't seem to like to work for free and from my experience, are generally premadonnas who don't like criticism and leave whimsically) we could implement more useful information in menus, better menu systems (such as mech selection and so forth). If you guys could find these people, we could use them.

What I think is missing from the mod is manpower to create and finish off our planned list of assets and features, so we can then move on to things that are NOT planned and just go for it and pick shit we think is cool and be all like "HAY GUYZ, EVERYTHING IS DONE, LETS MAKE MOAR COOL SHIT".

1. An in game implementation of a planetary meta game complete with star map and navigation, resource databases etc. In other words, take NBT, streamline it and pop it into the current lobby system in MWLL. THIS would be totally cool.

2. Better collision model encompassing the entire mech, not just the lower legs.

3. Deformable terrain as MWLL vehicles traverse the terrain surface.

4. Mechlab

5. More vehicles, more maps

6. Better animations

7. Customizable "skins" for all MWLL vehicles

8. A 1 month fully paid vacation for all present and past MWLL team members to the tropical paradise of Fiji. Complete with diving gear, sail boats, speed boats, ski-doos, food and drink, and hot babes with sun kissed skin so hot it will melt your popsicle, oh oh oh, ohohoh ... NOW THAT IS WHAT I CALL A GAME FEATURE !!!

Ammo types would be a really "easy"  way to add many new variants and playstyles without actually adding new variants.

However, I use the term easy lightly.  I actually don't have any clue on how easy it is to implement multiple ammo types for a single launcher.  The LBX/ AC ammo type would also need some serious looking at. A LBX with AC ammo would be seriously underpowered compared to AC unless it's dmg was way higher per shot or the fire rate changed.

I haven't read thruogh all posts since it's about bedtime over here, and it's time for a last post before leaving;

I'd second the map argument...
we could use more for each gamemode, and we'll even need more for future gamemode(s)...
of course we (the mappers) will continue to produce official maps, but keep in mind that we can only do them one by one, and that we are trying to meet certain standards regarding look, gameplay and performance, in fact it takes a while to make a new map...

I can only speak for myself, but I have concepts for four different maps lying around next to my PC which I would like to try, but atm I need to focus my attention on the one that's supposed to go out with 0.5.0.
And I think about the same goes for the other mappers on the team.

As Defender said, the automapdownload will be fixed with 0.5.0, so aside from waiting for us to finish new maps, it's up to you to get your ideas ingame! ;D

in that regard, have fun...

... and good night! ^^
If at first you don't succeed try again, and if you don't try again, you'll be hit in the face with a shovel!

I find it hard to fathom how our relatively young player base hasnt been able to recruit a "few" people to help the devs. All you guys in HS and college cant find anyone to help out on this project just as a work experience? Thanks for replies, pretty much as I expected that manpower is low which I find unfortunate. I thought I had the tools to help audio wise, but I dont , not to mention I am old3r family dude etc.
Can only imagine what the mod would be like properly staffed.
Great Job so far anyways.
