Good GPU for about 100$?
« on: May 08, 2011, 08:27:11 PM »
I recently bought a new PC (3.3 quad core, 4gb DDR3 ram. original PC was 2.3 dual, 4gb ddr2) for playing MWLL, but I'm still running on my old EVGA GeForce 9800 GT graphics card. I haven't had a chance to try it yet with MWLL, but I'm looking for something a bit more modern.

The 9800 GT on my old computer gave me about 30 FPS on Death Valley with absolutely everything disabled, fullscreen at 1400x900 resolution. Kagoshima topped out at about 10 fps on a full server.

I'm considering getting the Gigabyte GeForce GT 440 (this one:  http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=7228992&CatId=3669 ) but I was wondering if there are any cards that are better for around the same price. Reviews of the 440 seem to be conflicting between it's better/worse than the 9800. I'm going to be running this on 64bit Windows 7, on directX 11 if possible.

Get a 5770. That is as LCD (lowest common denominator) as I would go at this point.

I have a 5770, its a good card, runs quiet and cool, the only time I ever hear it is when I play mwll, plus dx11

I think there is even a fanless version for not a lot extra,

I'll be replacing 2 5770's next week, they work really well. Details in this thread:

Get a 5770 or 58xx or a 1gb 460. Not sure on prices, (I'm sure the 460 is probably too much) but thats about as low as I would go for this mod.

Hrm, there's a Galaxy GTS 450 for 90$, about 30$ cheaper than the 5770. Most comparisons it far exceeds the 5770 in every game, except for Crysis Warhead, where it's about 10 FPS less than the 5770.

wat do

Assuming things work out with my 6950, I'll sell you one of my 5770's for $100.00 (both for $200.00).  There is a link to the specific card in the thread linked above.

If you're going to pay for a GTX 460, you really should get the 1GB version for the 256-bit memory bus width.  The 5770 is about on-par with a 192-bit 460 768mb for $50 less.
