Battlestar Galactica Online
« on: May 14, 2011, 06:04:33 PM »
Has anyone tried this game? It's free to play, you don't need to install anything other than a plug-in, and it plays straight through your browser.

Admittedly it's not quite up to snuff with the most modern of massive multiplayer games, but I'm having fun with it. Then again perhaps I'm biased. I was a huge fan of the new BSG series; was hands down the best frakkin' thing on TV.  ;D

Yeah until like halfway through the second series, then it became as bad as Star Gate Atlantis.

Yeah until like halfway through the second series, then it became as bad as Star Gate Atlantis.

BSG was pretty consistent throughout IMO.

I even watched Caprica. Though I was less enthusiastic about that series, I found all the BSG backstory interesting.

What was wrong with SG: Atlantis? I agree it wasn't as good as SG-1's first 8 seasons, but I actually like it better than SG-1's last couple seasons.

Hell I even watched SG:U though I was a bit lackluster with taking the show into a darker BSG-esque direction since that's just not what I came to love about the SG series. SG is about a good combination of humor, adventure, and entertaining character interplay.

Now Firefly...I just started watching that from the Science channel (which is replaying the series) for the first, and I'm really enjoying it. There aren't even any new episodes being made and it's the best thing currently airing on TV IMO.

I have watched all the new BSG stuff as well, I think all the movies, and Caprica.  Waiting for Blood & Chrome next.  Haven't tried the game though.

Yea, I'm looking forward to Blood and Chrome too. I haven't heard of a release date as of yet though.

If you're interested in giving BSG Online a try, it takes less than 30 seconds to DL the plug-in and you're off...and like I said, it's free; nothing to lose in either time or money really.

The game supports itself from selling cubits (one of the ingame currencies), but you can get enough of them for upgrades without buying anything. The only time a purchase is useful is if you want to buy certain upgraded ships which it can take a very long time to afford via normal cubit accrual. I kicked in $13 to get the Viper Mk7 for instance, but you can do just fine with a regular Viper or one of the other upgraded ships that can be purchased with Tylium instead of cubits.

What I really can't wait for is the total conversion for Freespace Open called Diaspora. They actually worked on some of the models for BSG Online. Of course it's probably going to be another year or so before the release. Here's a trailer.

WTH is Freespace Open? I played Freespace 2 way back in the day and it was the most memorable space shooter I ever played. What made me love it was the feature of power distribution in your ship that could be incrementally spread amongst the engines, weapons, and front, side, and rear shields.

Need to get out of dodge fast? Put all the power to engines and bolster rear shields once the enemy is all behind you. Making a frontal attack on a cap ship? Power to forward shields! Aft shields starting to buckle? Pull some power from the rest of the shields to support that side. Need to deal out some serious damage on the quick, put more power to weapons.

Since it was real time combat it could be nerve wracking to be making the correct adjustments while dogfighting, but that also made it very immersive.

BattleStar Galactica Online is an absolute joke. No Joystick-support? Runs through a browser? What is this, the Farmville of spaceship games? You shouldn't even be allowed to call yourself a Space Combat Sim if you don't support joystick. Period.

Not everyone uses a joystick, though whether or not they should is another matter. And running through a browser is perfectly fine using the Unity engine. It looks fine, great for being a Free to Play game.  I played it a fair bit before I found MWLL. Needless to say I now pester you guys with my noobish ways. Aren't you so lucky?

I cannot wait for Diaspore. Been following it like a crack addled monkey.

I haven't been able to fulfil my space needs since Tachyon: The Fringe. Now, THAT, was a space game.

Obviously were it a game you just went to the store and dropped $70 on or had to pay $20/ month for I can see ya being non-plussed, but the quality for a free MMO that doesn't even need to be downloaded...for what it is it's impressive. Browser games have clearly come a long way since games like adventurequest (is that still around? I haven't messed with it since something like 2003).
