Descent Freespace 2
« on: May 24, 2011, 04:12:36 PM »
Only one of the best space flight sims from the late 90's has been reborn.  When the company that wrote it shut down they released the source code to the world.  Now you can play it in all its glory with updated graphics and over a decade's worth of mod support.

http://scp.indiegames.us/

You can now play Freespace 1, the FS1 expansion Silent Threat, FS2, Blue Planet and many more campaigns all run on the FS2 engine.  I downloaded the updates last night and gave it a run.  *insert drooly emoticon here*

There are several stand alone mods based on the FS2 engine as well.  Battle Star Galactica, Wing Commander, and Babylon 5 just to name a few.

If you were unfortunate to have lost your copy of FS2 you can pick one up for a whopping $6 at gog.com and then download the updated content for free from the link at the top.   (Yes, I have been revisiting my old games again for sheer fun factor).

Now if they would only do something like this for the X-Wing Vs. Tie Fighter series I think I could die happy.
MechWarriors = MWLL  - Check
Tribes 2  -  Check (see the Tribes 2 post)
FreeSpace 2 - Check
Unreal Tournament (GOTY) - Check (native still runs great even in W7....instagib BABY!)
X-Wing vs Tie Fighter - Fail (Greedy Lucus bastage)

4 out of 5 ain't bad.   ;D

Oooooohhhhh...and look what I just found for XvsT!   :o

This is one of my favorite games ever. Like, top five. (Off the top of my head and for no real reason - Homeworld, Mechwarrior 2, Alpha Centauri, and Half-Life 2)

wat no

http://hard-light.net/ for all your Freespace-related needs. The best campaigns IMO are Blue Planet and Transcend. I hold BP2: War in Heaven alongside HL2:EP2 for storytelling. Just sent off some auditions for voice acting in the not-so-near-future re-release of WiH. :)

Oh...
Please do not use "Descent" in this context. It was renamed for a reason. While the game itself (Conflict Freespace) was fun all the way, it had nothing to do with the Descent games I played until my fingers bled. I remember some great LANs there.

WHOAH! That's sweet news ;D
I loved Freespace Descent to pieces, one of the best space sims ever! Thank you for the tip, bud  ;)

Btw, no offense, but that canon Descent you're talking about looks like a dinosaur. Like some kinda Zero Tolerance on steroids lol. Freespace Descent is miles ahead of it in coolness terms :P

Freespace is certainly fun, but I still prefer the Descent 1/2/3/3:Mercenary series myself.  I miss the pilot-guided fly-by-wire missiles!

Isn't that news about five to ten years old? I didn't even know FSO still existed.

FreeSpace was great, i loved the games (despite the lack of an intense story-telling, something Wing Commander never disappointed me with). So thanks for bringing it up in my mind, maybe i'll give it another try in the next weeks (though i would have to stop playing MWLL for this, at least for a while).

Wasn't Descent the sim where you went into asteroids and fought off the crazy mining robots?

I remember playing Descent 2 on a 33.6k using Kali.  Two joysticks were a must, plus a hat.  Great game.
When you saw this , this , or this coming you GTFO.

Back then my GPU was an original 3Dfx Voodoo with the pass-thru cable.  The first ever consumer 3D GFX card.  I don't have that anymore, but later bought a Voodoo5 5500.  A week after I bought it 3Dfx went under.  I was pissed, but kept the card for nostalgia's sake.

I picked up Freespace 2 last year on gog when it was in beta. I loved the original and missed out on the release of the second. Haven't played through the second yet because I was trying to figure out all the mods and add-ons you could put in it. Still kind of liked the first with the little amount of game play I have already experienced.

Where can I find alpha centauri. That was a great game also.
Edit for greatness.

Wait...what?  FS2 was a full release in 1998.  The FSO was born when Volition released FS2 as open source.
Or where you referring to gog being in beta?

@Sucker - when they originally launched Freespace it was called Descent Freespace (probably marketing it off the latest Descent engine?).  Thus my old habit of calling it so.  Yes I played the Descents and liked them but Freespace filled the void left by the absence of a decent space sim (loved the Wing Commander series and played them all as a kid).

@Leeko - You are correct with your link (which can be found linked at the site I posted).  I just posted where I found the latest online down loader to get people started.  Be fore warned...if you select "down load everything" it is just over 6Gb but includes a lot of the extra campaigns.

I need to map my flight stick and make sure my multiplayer is set up because my youngest brother and I are going Shiva hunting.   ;)

I did not know that Freespace was not renamed outside of Europe. Thanks for the info.
Descent 1 & 3 were great games. Descent 2 had terrible weapon balancing, especially in multiplayer. Only good thing in D2 were the Flash and Mercury Missiles.
The one thing I remember about Freespace was my first encounter with the Shivans. A single fighter, not trackable by radar. And I loved to fight him, only having sound to determine where he was positioned around me.
Really cool game.

And you couldn't hurt it because it had shields your weapons couldn't penetrate. I remember that fight too. And several others, from both games.

Really cool game.

Oh you could hurt it, it just took a while to actually damage it ;)
