does game engine support mechs being "dragged/towed"
« on: May 26, 2011, 10:07:21 AM »
i was wondering if it is possible for one asset to grab and move another. it seems that BA can reasonably ride a mech. could there be a possibility of having a tow tractor to recover legged mechs maybe? i know it would likely be pointless because MWLL is often too fast paced to drag a downed mech back to base but i was just curious if it is possible.

As crysis has a full physics engine, this would be possible. It would look really funny however if you would drag a legged mech across the map ^^

It is possible, but won't be fun.

More interesting question is: is it possible to make torso twist after a hit and mech falling down after a heavy hit and getting up then?

thank you much for the quick response. its good to know that there is a huge world of possibilities that we can constantly annoy you developers with.

@vivicector- that the falling down seems like it would require a lot of animation work, and then there is the task of getting back up. (being legged is already enough of a way to immobilize a mech). as for the torso twist, i hear that physics in general is really hard on processors and with mechs regularly getting hit with 20-200 missiles/projectiles in less than 30 seconds i can see some serious cpu overload happening.

Would be possible. Do you really want a torso twist after each hit? Some people are already anoyed by the srm shake effect we currently have.
The falling down and getting back up would require a lot of animation work, and as you all should know, we are short on animators.

What would you do with the legged 'Mech after you dragged it across the map? Drag it back again? I somehow don't think you could put it into a repair bay - either because you can only drag (not push) it or because the game never had to rebuild a destroyed leg before and would probably just see it as a destroyed component that's not repairable.

A torso twist after getting hit by a gauss-shell would be a nice thing. It's not like these weapons could fire at you without interruption.

What about a BA-"tractor-beam" to drag a 'Mech a few meters? It happens that your mech gets stuck in some whole and you have to abandon it.

In these cases make a screenshot make a screenshot with the map open and r_displayinfo 1 entered into the console and file a bug report so that the mappers can go over it.

yep! May be not after each, but after hit from a powerful weapon. Like it was in MW4, really miss those. SRMs are causing shake, and it is ok, but Gauss should make your cockpit turn for 10-30 degrees. Hit from HGauss - even worse.

A person who played MW4 will get the idea. :)

I would like to stress this point. It really is A LOT of work to get falling animations for each and every mech in the game. We currently have a lot of animation states and adding a falling animation requires an transition between each current state to the falling animation. So please understand we really do not have the resources to add something like this in the game before 2025 :D

At least it's not 3025, of course by then we'd be piloting for real and would have to worry about animations - except in holovids...  :P

Replacing TAG with a tow cable would have been handy the other day when Focusboy kept getting legged. Maybe he was unlucky, or someone really had it in for him...
Anyway it would have been fun to drag his legged 'Mech back across the dunes of Sandblasted  :)

Remember people, If their armor is too strong for blasters, use your tow cables and go for the legs!

realistically speaking, dragging a 50 ton machine just doesn't make much sense due to the amount of gravitational and frictional forces you'd have to overcome. It would be easier just to lift it onto a large truck bed and haul it on wheels.
Play my free open source web game MiniMek - Urbie Defense!  Its "mega fun" but with mini meks!

Airborne Mech Unit!

"What's that big shadow?"
Looks up and sees an MK2 being dropped.
"OH SH*T!!!!"

Do it!  I'd learn to pilot a Karnov for that aspect alone.   ;D
