Temporarily deactivating registering
« on: June 06, 2011, 05:34:35 AM »
Well, what it says.

The current flood of Spambots makes checking what has been updated and what still needs checking a pain, because you can't check the recent updates any more. (and I guess blocking 10+ bots each day is not very fun for the wiki-mods, too)

So I suggest that registering should be disabled, at least until we have finished the great update-jump from .4.x to .5.x

If anyone really wants to join the registered editors, he should PM the mods during that time, and the mods could add an "empty" account manually.

I poked Sky_walker on the status of required e-mail confirmation or manual account confirmation by mods.

I'd suggest adding this to the mediawiki:

http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Combating_spam#Honeypots.2C_DNS_BL.27s_and_HTTP_BL.27s

There are more examples how to fight spam which could be intersting to keep spambots at bay while also allowing the majority of users to freely edit when required. Or the wiki could be moved to an 'approved editors' wiki with the forums as a place to discuss edits and new pages - which would be some harder way to keep track of things I'd assume.

Horrible how bots jump on those systems :( They should all just stop annoying innocent wikis :)

Which gave me the idea to add automated systems instead to reduce workload on mods and also allow easy access edit wiki pages without jumping through hoops like creating a forum account to ask for access the wiki :) Stops spam almost guaranteed but also might scare people off that could be of real help editing and expanding the wki.

Just 2 cents, wiki worked great so far :)

Ok, it would be nice to not have the signup complicated but that confirmation solution is rather easy to enable. For discussing more clever solutions drop Sky_walker a message on his wiki talk page? :)

I'll push this again.

The wiki has been without moderation for about a month, and the bots seem to know that. There are currently about a dozen spamlinks posted a day and no one is available to do something against it.

I suggest again to look fo ways to make registering a little more bot-proof or to block it completely until the mods are back.

Considering that we might see a big update soon all this spam in the recent changes will get in the way of the update process.

The concerns you raise has been addressed internally. Please remain patient until it is resolved at the administrative level.

I am not at liberty to address anything on the wiki, other than what all other regular members are able to. Sorry for any inconvenience the current state of the wiki has brought upon you :/

No problem, I just thought I'd push this here as some kind of resubmission.

I knew from this thread that Cygma and Seraph had something in mind for the Wiki, but since this was half a year ago I thought that it might have been burried under other work and ended up completely forgotten  ;D

Looking forward to whatever anti-bot tools you guys can come up with.

Finally someone with the magic access got around to it :)
For now it's just manual account creation being disabled. Granted, it's not the most elegant solution but it should work for now.
