I really miss the owens' lean
« on: June 30, 2011, 04:45:42 AM »
I know this might seem like a small thing, but I loved this feature so much. It really added to the feel of the mech and gave a great sense of weight. It's the little things like that that pull you in. When I first noticed it I assumed that it'd eventually be added to more mechs, and now nothing has it  :(

I know that Wars doesn't support the feature that made it work originally, but is there no chance that it might come back in the future in some reworked form? Even a little bit of lean applied to the animation at any speed might be nice. That side to side movement added to the feeling of inertia so much.

EDIT: If you're a new player and have no idea what I'm talking about, or if you've just forgotten how much fun this was, watch this video:

I hope that it can be added back someday...

So I can blast their leg off with a LBX as they're running away and watch them simultaneously tumble to their side while tipping forward in a wild spin  ;D

We can't. Its part of the core engine and this feature was removed, for whatever reason, with Crysis Wars.

Trust me, if we had a chance to add this easily we would have done it already :D

So that's it? It's never coming back and we'll never see anything like it in the future?

Damn that's depressing. I almost wish it'd never been added now so I wouldn't know what I was missing.

But thanks for replying Seraph  :)

This was one of the very first things I noticed when I played MWLL on Crysis Wars :'( How I miss this!

Adding it, just to take it away from us all, to make us suffer like this, is EVIL!!!

But at least the devs care enough to add little things like this when they can, because little touches like this really do make a game.

Its a core engine feature, that blends a procedural lean with the other animations. We can't touch that code I'm afraid, and I certainly have no intention of rewriting the animation system any time soon  ;D

Not even for a 2/3rds full bag of Werther's Original and a autographed Seaquest DSV fanscript?

Would it be possible to include leaning as part of the regular owens' running animation? Is the turning animation different from the "running in a straight line" animation?

I have no idea what I'm talking about. I should probably stop grasping at straws and just accept that it's gone.  :)

Unfortunately sgnl05 that is exactly what Toth was alluding to here, that it cant/isn't going to happen.

I really miss it too  :-[

Well he made it sound like the lean was a seperate animation from the regular ones that moved the mech, so I thought that maybe lean could be incorporated into the normal animations if it wasn't possible to have it as a seperate thing anymore.

But you're probably right. I'm just armchair developing at this point, which isn't helpful.

The "separate animation" that Toth is refering to is a procedural animation feature from the original Crysis, the effect is not "baked in" to the predefined walking animation, but is an automatically generated effect that was inherent to the Crysis animation system that did not make it over to Wars for some reason known only to Crytek.  Simply incorporating the animation is not possible since it is not part of the original walk cycle and would look ridiculous if added without the procedural system governing its expression.

Get back to making your map and quit bothering the devs with stuff they can't do anything about.  ;)

Heh, same here. Didn't realize it til someone mentioned it while back. I would have been happier in my ignorance, still leaning in my chair and making my vroom noises.
