[SPOILERS] So I've been reading through the literature...
« on: July 13, 2011, 06:55:56 PM »
...and I'm just getting to the part where Victor Davion authorizes Project Gemini so that Thomas Marik's son Joshua is allowed to die and a body-double replaces him (Bred for War - Michael Stackpole).

What a dick move.

I know it was for the good of the FedCom blah blah, but seriously, what a fappbag Victor is.  Have some god damned honor and let the man know he no longer has an heir.  I used to be a fan of House Davion, especially under The Fox, but the children of Melissa and Hanse are nothing but douches so far, every one of them.

I find it pleasing you dislike Victor so early. Cause the real d-baggery has barely started.  ;D

Its actually one thing I like about the Btech universe. No one clearly the "good guy" although Davions and FedCom get pretty close. But that's mostly because so many books are written from their point of view.

My least favorite books are the ones where the "bad" guy is so over the top evil its impossible to take their motivations seriously.

Amazon has them too, you can get them used for very cheap. They are starting to appear in e-book format as well. Probably want to start from the beginning, or cherry pick. There are about 70 or so of them.

thriftbooks ;) 2.99 shipping to Canada, and most of the bt books are damn cheap. Arrives within the week normally depending where it was shipped from.  I have most of my novels through them.  Only problem is they barcode sticker the bottom of the spine... it does comes off fairly clean but i have had some damage to the used books taking them off.  otherwise used book stores are your bet.

Archon Katrina forever! Down with that Davion Devil! ;)  Victor is depicted as the "every man, i'm super humble, Archon Prince".  He would have been killed by his own retardiness without the help of really good friends (Galen Cox, Kai Allard-Liao, Phelan Kell etc)

He's made REALLY dumb decisions, but works perfectly as a figure head and knows how to spot talent and delegate to them.

Reading the clan invasion and then operations B/S (bulldog/serpent ;) ) The only real "hero" ie Gary Stu, nothing wrong with them, paragon of virtue is Kai.
.... yes i'm still bitter he never got captured and turned into a Jade Falcon bondsman but instead had a future where his homeland was taken out from under him while he was doing the "right thing", and then was basically, captured by his cousin "for his own safety" and placed under house arrest for the rest of his natural life, which was long enough for him to give his inbreed niece Yen Lo freaking Wang. ARRRRRRRR RAGE RAGE RAGE.
How can you like Katrina after she had a hand in killing her mom and also not warning Galen Cox about the attempt on his life?

Right now Peter seems like the lesser of the three evils, and I remember from MW4: Mercs that he comes out of the monastery and takes back the throne (die, Nondi!)  But in the books so far he has acted kind of like spoiled brat (I was happy when he went into exile so I wouldn't have to read about him as much anymore).  He reminds me of Morgan Hasek-Davion (who disappeared from the books?  Haven't heard about him in forever).

Theodore Kurita is probably my favorite House ruler at this point.  Sun-Tzu Liao is a little twat, Victor is a douche, Thomas Marik is hardly ever written about, and the Steiners have always annoyed me with their constant scheming on one side of the family or the other.
Morgan kinda is killed en-route to huntress to slap the clans about. (read twilight of the clans series)
Peter was a bit of a little child before getting self-exiled to the monastery.  After he comes out he's a pretty sound guy (in fact more likable than Victor imo). Theodore is a little bitch to start out with but what can you expect from a semi-insane father like Takashi.  But I would agree with you he's probably the most likeable character apart from Justin Xiang (just cos I prefer the older books to the newer crap), and surprisingly I like Focht as a character especially later on (again twilight of the clans series and onwards).

Edited for spoilers

How can you like Katrina after she had a hand in killing her mom and also not warning Galen Cox about the attempt on his life?

There were others like her before, and strangely those are amongst the popular and beloved rulers of the fanbase.
How can people like Hanse Davion after he has killed tens of thousends soldiers in the fourth succession war just because Maximilian Liao dared to scratch his ego?
He planned a scheme that killed his own brother in law, and sent one of the most popular and famous units of his House to die, because they prefered Michael Hasek-Davion over him.
He even told his own generals that they can either serve him or be sent to die like the 5th Syrtis Fusiliers. (the unit mentioned above)
Also, the Project Gemini was Hanses idea, he just never had to use it because Joshua was still healthy (as healthy as you can be with a fatal disease at least...) while Hanse was alive.
Katrina is really just Hanse 2.0, combining the wrath and intelligence of the fox with the charm and political wits of Melissa.

Out of all all Steiner-Davion children she is the one who fits most with the pre-clan-invasion cast of the BT universe.
Arthur is a plain old racist and to occupied idolizing James Sandoval to do anything worthwile. (Exept dieing in a fire... (almost) litterally)
Yvonne is pretty much useless. She might be intelligent and charming, but she is waaaay to soft to be anything more then a hindrance.
Victor is way to retarded for his own good, he has absolutely zero political skill and his only means of survival is relaying on his much more competent friends. (tough he gets the credits for anything they do...)
Peter is so-so, he is my second favorite Steiner-Davion child. He might be a sissy and spoiled brat before the exile, but the Peter that appears after that is a pretty good commander and leader.

and surprisingly I like Focht as a character especially later on (again twilight of the clans series and onwards).

I always found it funny who Focht really is...  ;D
One of the most scheming Steiners turns out to become the great hero of the IS and is generally seen as one of the greatest heros ever... Frederic Steiner.
