Tie Fighter was better than X-Wing (and X-Wing Academy)

Oooh, tough to limit it to 10, I have a lot of old games that I constantly play to this day. At this moment, these are the 10 I can probably assure you I"ll still be playing in 10 years, excluding MWLL from the list for obvious reasons.

Freelancer -- Oh god, this game is amazing. Years ahead of its time, and still has an active modding community.

The Elder Scrolls (entire series) -- Great games, with a world that just draws me in and won't let go. Mods make it better.

Left 4 Dead (1 & 2) -- Anytime you have 1-3 friends and want a great couple hours of gaming, L4D co-op is there. If you have more friends that don't mind the hilarious griefing that is VS, there's that too. Random matchmaking is shit though.

Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time -- absolutely groundbreaking game, I go back and play through it again at least once every couple years. Nothing will quite capture the feeling of completing it the first time though. Master Quest on the gamecube was a fun re-visiting of it with new puzzles that made it quite refreshing actually.

Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem -- Not something I can play every day for years, but it's a great experience that deserves replaying every now and then. Sadly the sanity effects don't fool me anymore, but it was INCREDIBLE the first time through.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent / Penumbra Series -- If you haven't played Amnesia, go play it. Now. Much the same as above, best on the first playthrough for all of these games, but still deserves a special place for me, as I've never played a game that has made me scream like  little girl before.

Halo (series, at least, up until Reach, I doubt the non-bungie titles in development will be anything but shit) -- Gets a lot of grief because of the shitty playerbase, but Bungie has a way with storytelling that is only matched by other great game developers like Valve. Plus, the music is absolutely brilliant and atmospheric. I really can't wait to see what Bungie does now that they've passed Halo off to someone else.

Marathon 2 -- Basically all the great things that make Halo awesome in story and atmosphere, wrapped up in a Doom-era shell... with crazy AIs. What more could you ask for?

Final Fantasy IX -- Best of the series, if you ask me.

Chrono Trigger -- Will never be surpassed in its awesomeness. The best damn JRPG ever made, best story, best characters, best music, best gameplay.

EDIT - Read the last page or so of the thread, and for the record: SNES > Genesis. N64 > PS1. Xbox > PS2 > Gamecube. And the current consoles are all crap, though I do own a bricked 360 :(

Oh, and PC > all.

EDIT Again:

Sega was great if you were a Furry  :P

Don't forget Star Fox, especially Krystal from Star Fox Adventures... which is entirely Nintendo.

I agreed until you said Academy.

Shadows of the Empire > Rogue Squadron II >X-Wing Academy > KOTOR > Pod Racer > All other star wars games

As I am a writer some of my picks are as much about story as gameplay.
1. Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem. Best story in a video game ever. The only true adaptation of HP Lovecraft's work. People always tout the insanity effects but to me those were just gimmicks. It is incredibly rare to find a story that actually reflects Cosmicism correctly. No Deus Ex Machina shit, no loose ends, you and humanity never had a chance.
Back when I had an avatar on these forums it was Mantorok.

2. Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. Lolz change of pace. Too many childhood memories wrapped up in this one, art was unique and gameplay a perfect mix of easy to complete hard to 100%.

3. TIE Fighter
Amazaballs. Best story in a starwars game barring KOTOR. Playing as the empire owned all. It literally took video games a decade to even approach the sheer amount of voice over in this game.

4. Star wars Jedi Knight III: Hard to describe how sexy online multiplayer was for this game. If you played this game and never played online with JAplus+ mod you missed out on everything. Some of the best game play I've ever experienced. It was like a FPS and Fighting game at once. The learning curve on this game was massive unless you just had talent. A grandmaster could be given the exact same move set and weapon as anyone else and not be touched. A fight between two masters was a beautiful thing to behold, made tribes look mechanical and even mechwarrior fights a vulgar brawl. If you ever seen those animes where two samurai jump at each other and the swords go through each other but only one dies when they land and only the winner knows why, that was this game .

5. Rome Total War With mods it is the best RTS I've played to date. I have to give props to Company of Heroes for demonstrating what RTS games can do, but Rome took tactical play to a new level without macro managing BS. The mod community has a commendable respect for historical accuracy and Europa Barbarorum has a wealth of accurate information hard to find even in a University on the subject of Ancient Warfare.

6. BattleField 2:
The hours OH GOD the hours. CS,CoD,MoH all feel like a joke after an epic 64 man round of chaos. Can't wait for BF3.

7. Super Mario RPG.
Like Chrono trigger.. but with Mario. Shit yes.

8. Command & Conquer Series Limitless lulz in all these games back before I had good enough internet to play games online.

9. Mechwarrior Living Legends. Basically epitomizes the other Mechwarrior games I've played. Mecha warfare done right, love the universe.

10. ??? Can't really think of a truly legendary 10th game right now.

1. BattleZone series. To date, I cannot think of another game that blends the shooter and strategy genres so smoothly. Multiplayer is a blast with friends.

2. FreeSpace series. Freespace 1 is the first game I remember seriously playing on a PC, at the ripe old age of 12.

3. MechWarrior series. Giant robots with lasers. I do not need to elaborate.

4. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl. SoC in particular because the later games just didn't manage to have the same atmosphere of the first.

5. X3: Terran Conflict. Managing gigantic battlegroups, expanding your empire, and plenty of explosions to go around.

6. Freelancer. An addiction of mine for about 3 years. Fun in multiplayer, even though roleplaying isn't really my thing.

7. Crysis. Beautiful graphics, great gameplay, and led to MWLL's creation.

8. Sins of a Solar Empire. Amazingly fun and strategic. The scale is massive.

9. MechCommander 2. Great game. Too bad nobody plays it anymore.

10. Battlefield 2. This is quite possibly the multiplayer game that feels the most like a war movie. Can't wait for BF3.

I love turn based combat like fo1 and 2 but i'm ok with bethesda doing a different approach to a old game. I don't think it would have sold as much as it did if it took the same formula as the previous game.
