Boarding Mech

Just Started,

I love the game, but is the only way to board a mech is to jump?

That really sucks

You mean get in to the mech?  Well the best way for most games is the catwalk you end up on when coming down from the spawn room, and there is a little gap in the catwalk, usually if you just run off it and hit your enter key when the icon shows you get in no problems... only the Solaris Arena's and Extremity are different and can make it more difficult to get in.

It's a limitation of the crysis engine, it maps a point where it thinks a person should be sitting in a vehicle (in a mech, the cockpit), and sets a radius around it where it will allow you to enter. Since the cockpit's a good ways off the ground, it forces you to have to jump up to the torso of the mech to get in.

You'll get used to it after awhile, and it's great jumpjet practice for your BA skills in the meantime. If it really gets to you from time to time, switch to using tanks temporarily so that you don't have to deal with it.

And welcome to the forums!

Jumping to the mech becomes second nature after a few days. Unless your in Extremity, damn you low gravity!

I must say that the whole "Start-as-BA-then-buy-asset-and-manually-board-it" is not very well highlighted for new players who are used to, in other games, FIRST picking a 'mech and simply spawning in it.

Unless they read the beginner's guide on the wiki or watch doorknob's excellent tutorial vids, of course.

The room you spawn in has a sign that says "Press the [,] key to buy vehicles". Also a sign telling you about the buy menu for ammo, how to enter your asset, how to stop it... really don't know how much more obvious it could be made. I thought those signs were great my first time in.

The only simple way of doing it that I can think of is adding a "tutorials" button to the game's main menu and having those link directly to doorknob's new player video tutorial series. That way even if the player completely ignored the main page of the website and the signs inside the mech hanger, it would be right there in clear view if he felt that he needed some direct advice.

I think that would be a great idea, DoorKnob's tutorials are fantastic, I hope he finishes them sometime, add a lot more... I am sure they were a hell of a lot of work though.

Assuming said tutorial button isn't also ignored ;)

Walk to the bay that your mech is standing in. There is an opening in the railing. Fall down onto it and press F (default). This way you take no damage and can still transfer cbills to teammates. Then go change your default button to something diff from F before you hit it in a brawl on accident:)

If it is is clear view right beside the multiplayer button in the main menu and the person ignores it, joins a game, bitches about how confusing the game is after ignoring all the signs right in front of him and quits, then honestly we didn't lose much ;) :-X

He should maybe change it before as trying to do it in game iirc will quit the game and load up the actionmapper... so him hopping in the mech and then going to go change his f key may make it for a short run in his first mech ;)

As much as this is tough love, it's true. You can only handhold players so much.

Very true. That's pretty much where I'd draw the line actually.
