Recording Program
« on: August 07, 2011, 11:01:37 PM »
I've thought of getting FRAPS or Camtasia but I'm not sure which one would suit my needs.

I'm looking for a program that will record video and audio. On the video portion I'd like for it to be able to record Fullscreen or Windowed Mode gaming. For Audio I'd like it to record from either a specific source or all sources (either or as an option). Looking for something that will do at least 30fps, more preferred.

I've seen some of you record some outstanding videos and wondering which programs you all are using.

FRAPS can get weird if you mess with the framerate settings.  My movies are smoother recording at 28fps than when I had it set to 60.  You only need 24 to capture motion IIRC.

FRAPS has been the standard for a very long time but the recordings are typically very large and split into 3.9GB chunks.  When you re-encode them, the video sizes come down to what you'd normally expect them to be.

That's because it doesn't do any compression or encoding on-the-fly while it's running, to ensure good speed.

This is part of why I like fraps. :) Though I often get lazy and forget to re-encode my videos and then find myself wondering where all my disk space ran off to.

Do note however that recording the audio is  a bit tricky at times. It is not uncommon for someone doing a fraps recording and also using TS or similar voice com software to get all game sounds, all conversation (over 3rd party voice comm) from other participants but lacking own speech. I am sure there are ways around that, but if you are expecting a simple install -> hit record -> perfect result you may end up disappointed.

Merf, no i hear my speech but it seems to capture it very quietly.  But i hate the sound of my voice... i have been told i sound like a teenager.

Can you elaborate on those features?

I know a little about FRAPS already, as I've used the trial. Just trying to get a feel for what gives the best results.
