Clan Mech Names
« on: August 22, 2011, 11:20:21 PM »
Just wondering why the names of the clan mechs are the IS names and not the true Clan names.  IE.  Madcat instead of Timberwolf.  Just something I noticed from an old school clanner.

People are stupid and would be confused.

Code doesn't support side-centric names.

That about sums it up.

The most popular MechWarrior used the Inner Sphere names, so it's logical to use them. It helps that a lot of the IS names are shorter and easier to say quickly than the Clan ones, Thor versus Summoner, Vulture versus Mad Dog.

+1 for you, best answers

Also, didn't know about the name restrictions per side....

I only refer to the clan mechs by their Trueborn given names in game, out of spite and hate, if for no other reason, plus I enjoy those names more....so F*** off and learn about the game your playing...

Also, search?

Also keep in mind that Clan / IS factions, when not tech locked, can be used to represent Clan vs Clan and IS vs IS in organized play; it's much easier for everyone if we stick with a single designation in terms of gameplay.

Given that not every Clan 'mech has an IS code name (i.e., only the first sixteen omnis used in the invasion are codenamed) it would seem more consistent to use the clan names at all times. They're not even being consistent with those names; why is the Stormcrow going to be named the Ryoken when the Mad Dog is given the Vulture designation instead of Hagetaka?

The devs making the mech presumably say "I want it to be called a ___ instead ____" if picking between different names.

It's not called the Hagetaka because it's only called that in books with the Draconis Combine, and none of the games calls it that.

Suppose that they are called by their is names to be consistent so when different teams creates some asset code/xml'/animations/different exports and so on, its understood for what asset will one be naming. For example most of the time animations and code setup are done by two different people so not create any confusion they always are IS designates. So they are located it that folder under that name so code points correctly without 2 people having to chase one another and see how its named/exported. That's just one blunt example...

Second, in order not to create any confusion or inconsistency, since MWLL project founders decided that assets would follow that naming, current game leads/devs are following that decision. Imagine that created (unreleased) asset(s) come out having their "true" names/nicknames/whatever I gather that first question would be "why are they named Y when the rest of them are x". The way I see it, it works flawlessly for the team this way and that's all that matters... Suppose that that can be changed on the buy menus with more elaborate explanation for each asset (I would be the firs guy to cheer for that). SO... now all we need is more people who love and understand flash and are willing to work for the pure personal pleasure.

IMO  I like the clan names better. What would be cool is that mechs/vehicles no longer dot nicknamed (like anaconda, beat stick, mr. toast & go, etc.) bot got their clan names example:

Mad Cat Prime "Timberwolf"
IMHO It would be better Timberwolf Prime "Mad Cat"
