Since BT lore is written from the I.S. point of view they use their name designator much like the US and NATO nations used their own designators during the cold war for aircraft and subs for example the "Yankee class" sub referring to a missile sub that had a common look to a US missile sub.

At least NATO reporting names for Soviet aircraft make sense:

If it begins with an "F" (e.g. Fulcrum, Foxbat) it's a Fighter
If it begins with a "B" (e.g. Badger, Bear) it's a Bomber
If it begins with an "H" (e.g. Hind, Hokum) it's a Helicopter
If it begins with a "C" it's Commercial (can't think of an example)
"Catapultam habeo. Nisi pecuniam omnem mihi dabis, ad caput tuum saxum immane mittam"
If you take this seriously, you're some kind of mouth-breathing fappwit that shouldn't have survived infancy.

IMO  I like the clan names better. What would be cool is that mechs/vehicles no longer dot nicknamed (like anaconda, beat stick, mr. toast & go, etc.) bot got their clan names example:

Mad Cat Prime "Timberwolf"
IMHO It would be better Timberwolf Prime "Mad Cat"
I like this idea... what good does a nick name give a player... that this mech must be used a lot?

Either that or Vlaad's very clear and logical explanation.

God no.  That's the "MechAssault" solution which ends up with some hilarious dialogue like "I can't tell .. it's either a Mad Cat or a Timberwolf!"
I will personally hunt you down and poptart your leg while your back is turned and you're in your base.

I just find it simpler to use the names given the machines by their creators, whoever they are.

Simplicity is a beautiful thing.  :)
