So, I made a mistake.
« on: September 04, 2011, 06:50:53 AM »
I was reapplying TIM to my 2500k, got the cooler back on booted up, just fine.
Ran some P95 to see how it does, a little high.
I realized I should get the side panel on for optimal airflow.
I saw that the heatsink fan was a little high on the cooler so I decided to move it down.
I had to uninstall my ram, readjust my fan and put them back in.
I installed them, booted up, and saw a poof of smoke come out of my case.
I went, oh f**k.
Had to flip the power, after it cycled on/off but never posting.
I thought my mobo had just bit the dust.
I realized I hadn't installed the dimm 1 ram correctly  :-[, flipped that around and it booted up.
Bios showed 4 gb, have 8 installed, so I shut down and slid both sticks over a slot.
Next boot 8 gb showed.

Is it safe to say I fried my dimm 1 slot?
Is it safe to stick my stick of ram into the dimm 1 slot to test it?
Should I bother sending the mobo in for a rma? Outside of Neweggs 30 day window.
I can't see the future requiring more than 8 gb of ram in the next 4 years right?
Finally, if I do keep this board, is it possible anything else was damaged?

Did you check the DIMM sockets and backside for burnmarks or anywhere else on the mobo for that matter :P

You can never have enough memory :o

DIMMs are notched for a reason; it should not be easy to install one backwards.

Is it safe to say I fried my dimm 1 slot?

Probably.

Is it safe to stick my stick of ram into the dimm 1 slot to test it?

Risky, but RAM is cheap. Don't use a good stick.

Should I bother sending the mobo in for a rma? Outside of Neweggs 30 day window.

Almost certainly would not be accepted if there is any visible damage.

I can't see the future requiring more than 8 gb of ram in the next 4 years right?

Depends on what you do. 4 years is a long time in PC terms.

Finally, if I do keep this board, is it possible anything else was damaged?

The DIMM that was in slot one, the CPU, and possibly even the PSU.

I would test them all.

There doesn't seem to be any damage that I am aware of performance wise.
Ran 20 min of P95, may have been closer to an hour and a half since it was running in the back ground, at 4.3 at 1.28v.
Several hours of Borderlands and MWLL.
If there was any damage wouldn't it crop up in rather noticeable ways?

Keep the motherboard. If you rma and and there is actual damage to the slot, the company will (probably) also see that it was caused by inappropriate use (installing RAM the wrong way) and therefore not replace it.

Also, by the time 8GB isn't enough RAM to play a game anymore, you'll (probably) need to overhaul the rest of your system anyway.

So there's no reason imo to get a new mainboard at this point.

That was my assumption too.
Will still check, anyway.

I've seen a molex put in upside down before.  That poor HDD didn't stand a chance ;)

If all you've lost is a DIMM slot consider yourself extremely lucky.  I would run a 10 cycle memtest86 and a 10 hour Prime95 before trusting the computer for regular use.

As has been stated already, any damage you've done to the PSU (unlikely), MB, CPU, or RAM will not be replaced by an RMA or warranty.  Experience can be expensive sometimes :-\

The fact that I did put it in upside down was a lapse on my part.
I know I'm lucky to get away with at least a bad dimm.
I really thought I had fried my ram as that seemed more likely.
No loss of money unless I do try and RMA to ASUS.
I just don't want to be down for a couple weeks.

10 hours of P95 complete.
Will run the memtest tomorrow and maybe throw in some Intel Burn test.
Anyone know of anything else to really stress my mobo?
Also if I got a multi meter, would I be able to do any testing on the board is that more work than it is worth?

It's possible to test "live" circuits but on something as complex as a motherboard you're not going to get any useful data from it.

I wouldn't run a damaged board myself, but if you really have nothing to lose other than the remaining hardware, which would be replaced with an upgrade anyway, just make sure you have good backups.

Without a baseline a multimeter can only show you so much. And finding safe testpoints on motherboards is getting harder and harder.

Comparing the measured voltages to what the motherboard reports in the BIOS might offer peace of mind. (hehe, almost wrote 'piece of mind') You can measure the voltages of the power supply loaded and unloaded.

Checking the temperature of components surrounding the CPU is another limited test. Any abnormally warm components may have been damaged.

If I decide to send it in it may be over Christmas since I wont be using my desktop anyway.
I'll just tell them some story of moving over a slot to find out it didn't work.
Sounds like they have a 3 to 5 year warranty on Asus products anyway.
That all hinges if I have a scorch mark anywhere.

If everything is working as well as you've reported, most of it is probably fine, you probably just blew a resistor or OCP fuse on the first memory slot.

A multimeter could tell you if slot 1 is getting power (vDIMM, termination voltage, and reference voltage), but probably not much more. Honestly, I'd just buy a cheap stick of DDR3 and try to use it in the first slot, if it works it works, if it doesn't you probably only risk that one DIMM (which shouldn't cost more than about 10 dollars).

DIMMs are notched for a reason; it should not be easy to install one backwards.

I don't even want to know what kind of force that took.
