Contemplating giving it another shot...
« on: September 05, 2011, 09:00:18 PM »
So I'm curious to see how MW:LL has progressed.  What I'm also curious about is if it runs better on Vanilla Crysis or Crysis Warhead.  Which version provides the better framerate for MW:LL and also... can they both play on the same servers?

Judging by your last real forum activity, I'm guessing you haven't played since 0.2.0.  If that's true, then yes, the mod has come a long way - and still has a lot of work left to do before it's considered v1.0.  Since then, we've been given three new game modes, four new assets (Uziel, Loki, Thor, Sparrowhawk), three new weapon families (Clan ATM, Clan Heavy Lasers, IS X-Pulse Lasers) with new variants to match, and many new maps (too lazy to count them all).  All of that backed up by a proper launcher, actionmapper, and auto-update feature suite.  I do look back on the 0.2 days with rose-tinted glasses, but I can honestly say it's like a whole new game.

Are there enough people actively playing it online to make purchasing Warhead worthwhile?  I don't have warhead :(

I also had framerate issues on the swamp map back in 0.2/0.3...

That link shows current and past player count status (in GMT +1), but you'll have to decide for yourself if it's "worthwhile"...I don't think you'll find anyone here who will tell you it isn't, especially when Warhead is only $20 on average these days.  To be clear, the mod runs on Crysis Wars, not Warhead, but Wars is included with Warhead.  If you buy it in hardcopy, they're on separate discs as opposed to the original Crysis, which had SP and MP bundled into one executable.  If you buy through Steam or other digital download services, they'll likely be separate downloads (but not separate purchases, you just need to buy Warhead).

As far as framerate issues go, I can only say that it's still CryEngine2.  If you feel like posting your system specs, you're likely to get a few replies on what kind of performance you can expect.  There are quite a few optimization options out there, though.  Bear in mind that the mod is more CPU-dependent than most people think, so if you're on a single core processor, or older Core 2 Duo, I wouldn't expect mind-blowing framerates regardless of your GPU.

The cost of warhead is so low these days, and for that small price you get warhead, wars and best of all MWLL.

More reasons to do it, than not

At the very least you get another crysis game to play
You have to understand the code of duty and honor that rules those who pilot these engines of destruction. Placing such an awesome weapon in the hands of an individual implies a similar gesture of trust

Not to mention a lot of quality community maps that have been pumped out in the last few months, and the map auto-downloader.

Well, your processor is the weakest link, but I'm sure overall you'll be fine.

Better than my rig by a long shot. While I don't get phenomenal framerates, I'm comfortably playable on an older card (a slightly-overclocked GTS 250 that nets me about 30 fps in combat, give or take a bit depending on the map)

If you have framerate trouble, disable SLI and run on only one card. I've been told CryEngine 2 has... issues with SLI, to the tune of doubling or tripling framerates without it at times, though that may have been a problem with Vista not liking GeForce drivers, as I'm told Cossfire setups had better luck. Mind you, my information dates to around the release of Crysis, so things may have changed since then.

In any case, Warhead/Wars is $20 on Steam and you might be able to find it cheaper if you're willing to brave a GameStop (or similar). Warhead is actually a fairly amusing game in itself, and while I would have regretted the price for it alone, it's a steal considering I'd be perfectly willing to pay full new-game price for MWLL.

Q6600 here. So long as I turn off some of my background stuff, I'm fine.

Speaking of which, it's also worth pointing out that once Wars/Warhead is installed and run once, if you go with the Steam version, you don't actually have to be signed in to Steam in order to play MWLL.
If you get killed, try to scream a lot. That way I'll know I'm on my own.

A Note:
There's a difference between constructive feedback and positive feedback. I will attempt the former, but until and unless there is a rule instituted that requires all feedback to be positive, I'm under no obligation to be nice. If you do something that sucks, I will tell you it sucks, and why, and mincing words or stroking egos over it only slows us both down.

If you play it in 64bit. ;)
