It is nothing like Klingon Academy. The ship combat is not bad, but there is no ship fitting system whatsoever (there are 8 weapon slots; put in them whatever you want...that is pretty much it). The fitting system was the best part of EVE Online, IMHO. You had zillions of different modules that could be installed in infinite combinations (quite literally, IDIC), but one had to keep CPU, Powergrid, and usefulness in mind. It was even more fun than playing around in the mechlab in any given Battletech game. Thus, STO's ship-fitting system is far too simple, IMHO.
The ground combat, while better than before, is still meh. The graphics need to look better and work more smoothly. They finally have the Borg ships looking like they are supposed to, including something that bears a striking resemblance to V'ger (interconnected storylines, anyone?). That said, the game still needs work...a lot of it. Right now, Cryptic is composed of 22 people, last I heard, although they are hiring right now, so that may take some time. That said, I have a lifetime subscription, so I can just check the game out from time to time, and see if it has improved (and, honestly, the things they have done with it in the past year have made it a whole different game...I look forward to seeing if they can do better with more resources).
