PS1/2 gaming without the console...

I have some PS2/PS1 games I would like to play (PS1 games not a problem...thank you, emulators), but I was wondering if there is some sort of hack or program available that enables their use on a PS3?  Failing that, is there a good, reliable PS2 emulator out there?

I only ask because I went to play Einhänder the other day, only to discover that all my memory cards are dead...PS1 and PS2.    All my Armored Core series gamesaves, all my earned bits in Warship Gunner 2, all my bikes bikes in Tourist Trophy...I cannot bear the thought of starting over, knowing the cards will just die again at some point, even if I get new ones.

Yeah PS1 emulators are so common even the Wii has one.  AFAIK there are no PS2 emulators.

I'll contact a few PS3 fanboys I know and find out.  Is your PS3 a fat or slim, what year is it, and are you running the most up-to-date OS/firmware?

All PS3's have software PS1 emulation; you can pop in and play a PS1 disc without issue.

Only the Fat PS3's have the backward-compatibility chips for PS2, the new slim ones do not. You can pop in and play a PS2 disc without issue.

My understanding was that the PS2 hardware emulation was removed after the first couple production runs.

Yer only the 60gb models of ps3 will run ps2 games (which I have).  I have a jap imported ps3 when they first come out and has done me well.  Also play allot of my old ps2 games on it.

Mine was late production, after they discontinued the 60GB model; it expressly stated on the packaging that it was not compatible with PS1 and PS2 software.

I use it to play some of my favorite PS2 games on my computer. It takes a bit of tweaking for each game to get it going just right, but that's pretty normal for just about any emulator.

No, not really. although they are all produced out there so physically they are all 'imported' at some point but they released different region versions of them.  My doesn't run some region locked ps2 games for example (manhunt is a good example that it wont play because it was region locked).   Also the default controls are layed out different along with which update server it contacts for patches (aka ... real fapping slow).

No, the 20gig, 60 gig and one of the 80 gig models do.

Meh, it's a business model.  Consumers over here don't seem to care so it was obviously a good business decision.
