SA_Inferno 0.1 [v2] - A Volcanic Blast From The Past
« on: October 04, 2011, 05:16:28 AM »
To those who've ever lamented over not being able to experience the BASERAPEBASERAPEBASERAPE of the original 0.1 version of Inferno, myself included, I present to you... SA_Inferno!

This is the version of Inferno that came with the very first release of MWLL. I got the inspiration to make this conversion when I saw that some of the RDL guys managed to get SA_Extremity from 0.2 working on their servers, and decided to try my hand at another one of the older maps that's seen fairly significant changes. In particular, the original version of Inferno was somewhat infamous for its combination of small map size, tight collection of bases, and complete lack of base defenses leading to a lot of combat around base areas. The fighting is fast, furious, and constant, and hopefully some folks will enjoy a bit of historical novelty out of this map.

NOTE: This map is meant to run in Team Solaris Arena and Test of Strength. I realize the file is tagged as SA, this is because this map dates from before the original Solaris Arena mode had its name changed to Team Solaris Arena, and I cannot change the name of the map file or folder without breaking a lot of the resource linking, particularly the multitude of custom materials present in this map. As such, the map will still be located in your SA maps directory, but it will not play in Solaris Arena/Last Man Standing.

History:

[v1 - 10/3] - Initial release
[v2 - 10/4] - Hotfix - Changed XML file to remind players the map is an unofficial conversion.

One request from us official mappers - Please make it abundantly clear in the map file name this is an older version of the map and is not official. It would be bad for everyone if it was named identically.

New idea- would I be able to use an external hard drive to add RAM and/or improve gigahertz?

Yeah this map was a rapetesticle.  Nice throwback effort nonetheless.

One request from us official mappers - Please make it abundantly clear in the map file name this is an older version of the map and is not official. It would be bad for everyone if it was named identically.

As mentioned in the OP, I absolutely cannot change the folder name or names of the map files themselves without breaking things. That said, I can change the archive filename, and I can add extra info to the XML to state that it's an unofficial conversion. I already have it set to state that it's the 0.1 version of the map.

I'm fairly certain that's a first. I think I'm gonna have to keep a note of this one... ;D

It was an official map at one point, keep in mind. This map has far more detail than your average custom level. Hell, the folder for the current Inferno is ~84MB for comparison. :P

Keep in mind that I don't have access to the .cry files, so no, nothing's been outright updated. I only managed to make slight modifications to files within the level.pak file to fix the issues with the Mech/VTOL factories. That said, I might be able to see about adding turrets to the map, but I really have no clue if they would work.

No need to change folder names, that will break it even more :P ... just changing the map display name in the XML to reflect that its not an official map when running on servers is fine. :)

PS. Why not make an application to join the dev team and make official maps offically ? lol.. No need to bodge around with pak files then ;) ... Post in the Join The Team section or PM me if ur interested, we can always use more mappers that know their way around sandbox.

Updated to v2. All I changed was some additions of UNOFFICIAL CONVERSION to the loading screen and archive filename so it's more obvious that this isn't an official map. No changes map-wise.

I briefly tried to get turrets into the map, but no beans so far. It's not a priority however; the base rape is part of the nostalgic fun! :P
