Stalker 2 planned with new type of DRM
« on: October 09, 2011, 02:17:21 AM »
Quote
In a recent open Q&A, Studio Director Sergey Grigorovich mentions the move, stating that “Software piracy is an issue for us, we try to fight it, but within reason.” The full quote is below:

Protection from piracy? Part of the content will be located on the server and downloaded as the game progresses. Permanent internet access is required. Text information, code and quests will be loaded through that connection.

The answer came off the back of a direct question from site Gameru.net regarding the game’s “security system”.

WHAT. THE. FAPP.

If this is "within reason" I shudder to think what the large publishers will come up with soon...
Is it really necessary to buy a console if one doesn't want to be treated like a criminal these days?

This why i stick to piracy!

They like to use pirates as an excuse to keep more control over their product. Thats all it is. Its nothing to do with piracy.

New idea- would I be able to use an external hard drive to add RAM and/or improve gigahertz?

It's insanely cool that GSC Game World straight up said they weren't making ANY concessions because STALKER 2 is being ported to consoles, and that they're developing it with the PC in mind... but wow that is terrible.

If it's ported to consoles, they WILL have to make concessions . .
And what do we want to bet that 1 week after release, you can get a pirated copy that is complete and offline working?

It will take a while to hack that together. Its doable but meh.

One day everything will be in the cloud and we ll only have terminals to access from. Then itll be like GITS, and we ll have to be like 'fapp the police' and go diving to fry some cyberbrains.

Q: What features have been removed/compromised in the PC version due to the multiplatform release?
A: Since we develop primarily on PC, you won't see any compromises in the PC version. The key difference between the PC and console versions will be the beauty of graphics (meaning PC will offer more of visual effects).

This why i stick to piracy!
I often pirate simply because the pirated versions are easier to play than legit copies.  I'd love to spend money on some of these games but if the devs are going to treat me like utter crap then I'll glady return the favor.

I like Valve's approach to piracy.  This approach is why their system is so successful and why no other DRM or digital distribution system will ever be able to compete with it.

Steams line of thinking is pretty sound. If you have no drm you don't piss people off to go get the hacked version. And as long as the game is always worth the money no one is gong to bother pirating it when they feel its worth buying. And when you couple it with everything else steam has to offer most people would rather pay and get great service.

Wish everyone would act like that.

God, wouldn't it be just awful if a team worked on a game for 1-3 years, and then actually made some money from legit sales at the end of that.

And if they make a genuinely good game, treating their customers like criminals won't be necessary.

Except that the game would still be massively pirated if they didn't use that kind of DRM, because too many people have bought in to this culture of "I didn't take a physical item from a store - removing a sale, therefore it wasn't stealing, and I uh, totally wasn't gonna buy it anyway, so it wasn't a lost sale, so getting it free is totally ok"
