MWLL Trailer - Lets do it diffrently
« on: October 29, 2011, 03:00:53 AM »
Okay folks I dont  know about you guys but MWLL feels like its in need of a new trailer, some thing new to get the attention of people who are not just old MW junkies. How might we do this you ask ? Well heres some thing I had come up with at least- feel free to offer suggestions.

Okay so we know this is a game about team work. Its also a game involving a lot of hard core mech/tank/plane fighting. And we all know its the Clan VS the IS. We also know that is a f*cking bad ass game that other people would most likely enjoy. So lets work all of these things into one nice shiny video that captures peoples attention.

What we will need for this vid to be seriously epic -

- A map. Err nvm as pointed out by Sintox we dont need a special map for this, if devs can do it then so can we.

- Lots of people, the idea is a fight on the map between IS/Clan forces SO PURE TECH. while that limets us to some units we can make it work.

- Going to need to Organize dates and times for the recording or to just talk about it, get ideas on the table or make adjustments to it.

- Another idea here is to show team work; How will we do that, well the idea here is the guy who is recording needs to be able to record the IS teams TS channel. (So think of it like a scrim but its fixed like boxing.) We are going to show the team work by doing some things in the game that involve it so a idea would be a raven communcating with the missile dudes (Catapults/partis and owns) that he is going to narc a target for them and then once the beacon is planted he says its up missile dudes fire and the fire works happen. The trick is to break down the team work methods while a fight is happening between units, so communcating that some thing like AA is taken out for air a air support run and all that juicy stuff. Basicly to a person whos never played the game before should be able to understand that the team work is a large component of the game

- Perhaps make a reference to how MWLL won two mods of the year? I donno some people might get off to that..

- A film dude is needed for sure. Music to, nothing intense, but some thing a bit slower/epic or ambient to go with the communications

Frankly the Devs just dont have the man power to do another trailer so how about we do it for them? could get some more fresh meat in the game and just help get the MWLL name out there.

So lets here the ideas/suggestions folks, would be cool if we could do SOME thing to help the devs out.

god damn over complex eh? we can easily simplify it once we get this going.

I don't think that a trailer is needed that goes very deep into mechwarrior story mechanics.
I'm talking about Clan vs IS, a map like it is described in the books etc.

IMHO we don't need a new map. We got maps and you can show what you want to
show on them. You can use several maps in one trailer as you have to cut the scences.
A trailer should allways be a kind of best of, no need for a real story. So show them everything we got.
Show them sand and pyramids, canyons , jungle and ice.

You also don't need to record TS. Focus on the pictures. You can record voices later,
(manipulate the sound like radio you know it from other trailers) to get the point you want
like some kind of story or explain the game mechanics.

Another approach could be starting at the spawn - the "command center" , zoom into the holo-desk,
showing battles and you hear the voices of a supervisor explaining everything about combined combat
and teamwork to a trainee who of course has questions which will be ansered by the supervisor
verbal and via video.

If I have spare time when you shoot the scenes I would of course be there.

ps: sorry for my bad english ;)

That works right there ya, the map thing was mostly to set the setting... if we can more then 14 people that just makes it all the badass :)

The problem with voice acting is that it requires you to have both a good voice applicable to what you're doing, as well as the ability to act. That you need both of these is why most fan movies - particularly those that require a militaristic air about them - have laughably bad voice acting. Generally, the less voice acting the better unless you know people who can do it well, and have the proper equipment to record without sounding like smashed ass through a tin can and string setup.

I imagine you want to make a movie similar in scope to the old Mechwarrior intros. And not the god-awful MW2:31CC intro (EAT BULLETS, FREEBIRTH ROCKS!). My favorite Mech intro might be MechCommander 1: it shows sort of how you playing the game is commanding units around - you are the MechCommander, and how you oversee the lance of mechs fighting a MadCat. Using terrain and orders, the commander has two units run around and flank while the Raven acts as bait. When the Raven seems trapped, the tactic pays off as the Centurion and whatever the other mech was (I forget - all I remember is EJECTING EJECTING EJEEECCCTTIIIIIINGGGG) are able to punch through the squishy rear armor - tactics is the name of the game.

Runner-up would be the Mechwarrior 2 Mercs intro, specifically because it achieved exactly what it had to: The guy in the light mech has valuable recon data and is trying to escape with it - we don't know from who or why, because it doesn't matter. Shit is exploding so we know it's an action game. He's supported by a teammate who faces down the 'pissed-off Atlas', and there's an in-cockpit shot showing what to expect from the gameplay - you are a Mechwarrior. Then it all makes sense as the Commando escapes - they're mercenaries getting paid, and they're pretty ruthless. Bam - MW2: Mercs, all you need to know.

I'm not the biggest fan of the old trailer - it's some cool shots but it doesn't actually show anything. Some panning shots and a close-up of a Mk 2's crotch (if you don't know what they are, you wouldn't 'get it'). A mech steps out of the hangar and fires some missiles at something we can't see, a VTOL flies like an idiot where he has no business being, some mechs are marching underwater on a map that wasn't even made official, a cool shot on Clearcut where - again - nothing happens (but the rising out of the water effect is neat), some aircraft fly around shooting lasers that never made it into 0.1.0 on Extremity and it's all visually confusing, and then a BA acts like a thug and kicks the camera over. Super-awesome if you already know what to expect from Mechwarrior but Toxy is right, it's not exactly the kind of thing to draw players in - nothing exciting actually ever happens. I don't even remember if it makes it clear that it's a mod for Crysis (much less Crysis Wars now).

So I vote yes for a new movie, but I'm not sure if anyone has the technical ability to get it done. Going to need a lot of talent from the community, including someone good with movie effects to pull off.

That'd be a Hunckback the Jaguar MadCat takes out first (hardly surprising, I wouldn't want that thing close either); the pilot was known as "Hardcase" .

Oh and MW:Mercs it was a Draconis Combine planet they were trying to boost off of with "The Stuff"....."Take that you Draconis Scumbag! Dakka Dakka Dakka" being one of the comms  8)

I've only seen the german version, but "Kurita Katapult auf dem Hügel" (Kurita Catapult on that hill) is also a good indicator of what they are shooting at.  ;D

On topic:
I also agree that it might be time for a new trailer, showing the nice things we got since that pre 0.1 stuff you see in the actual one. And that it should mention the awards MWLL won.

I dont have the skills to create any maps or do video recording/editing.
I have allot going on around me so cant guarantee participation, but if I have the time I can at least participate in the gameplay part of the work.
I would gladly jump into a mech and shoot at some stuff to help make a good video.

Things to figure out:

- What assets do we want shown? It's a combined arms game, so we don't want to show off just the 'mechs.

- What do we want to show them doing? Shooting, obviously. Missiles, lasers, ballistics.. Blowing up? Losing a limb? Another critical explosion? Maybe a shot of an Uziel losing one of those side-panels would be cool. (If someone created a story-board of scenes that would be a really good start.)

-Where do we want to show them? Do we want a montage of different shots in different places on different maps? Or do we want to do one map, one battle, one "story" for this trailer?

imo

Definitely want to show Demolisher
Reluctant to show Madcat/Vulture, as its foot is broken
Definitely show Warhammer
Show Uziel, Bushwhacker
Show Hephaestus
Definitely show Shadow Cat, Cougar, Puma
When will full game/demo/beta be released?
We're planning a beta release in the next *very* few weeks. At this time, we can't be more specific. Please stop asking.

No, I will not stop asking.

Ya sounds like a great idea, Thank you devs for giving us so many choices lol..

All of those ideas are things we should show some how, even if its in the back or some thing... A nova loosing arm id say would be sick possiably due to BA ambush.. though for planes we could show the rage inducing Fbombs. Keep the ideas coming folks, all sounds great!

Well I am sure everyone here has seen the MW reboot video and instead of the City fight show a planetary assault. This would showcase the combined arms aspect of the game and we should use only the most stable and well animated units in short heavy hitting scenes that combine into an all out battle in a rural setting instead of cities or forest; there have been enough of those already. Please do not attempt a redo of the older MW series, this MWLL sim is a more fully rendered interpretation of MW not seen before in the old Mechwarrior series. When you need pilots for the Battle footage and voice acting, I am available. Yes we would need proper unit markers on all of the equipment so it would look like a professionally done large studio intro or preview Video.
