For precision aiming, such as Lt. Gauss shooting and or the RAC5 variant, you really need a joystick with the ability to twist.  My actionmaps are set up so my regular yaw is on the A and D keys, but my joystick twist has a low sensitivity for pinpoint precision.
I disagree on this

Just make sure your VTOL controls are in shooter mode (aka the controls most FPS games have with mouse for looking up down, left and right etc. except you can fly and use A and D to roll) then just find a d00d to shoot and let go of hover and shoot just as you lose upward velocity but before you start falling (not that it really matters, but if you're really picky about presicion...)

If you actually have trouble hitting well like that (I find it ridiculously easy), you need to play more as BA (preferably on extremity where you basically are a VTOL)
I know many players here have their controls set up so that pitch is inverted and roll is on mouse and all that, but MWLL VTOLs don't function well acting like Apaches, so might as well change the controls into something that actually works :P

The reasons VTOLs don't act like modern helos is because they don't have the weapons to act like modern helos.

Give me a couple thunderbolts and you'll see some classic apache moves :P

Apaches are good for fast strafing runs that bombard an entire area with rockets or firing self guiding missiles at targets. Anything that requires more precision than that generally can't happen
Hell, people have enough trouble using that "classic" control scheme as-is. Try shooting light gauss in a helo sim (possible but definitely not practical)

I tried out the whole A and D for roll, and mouse/joystick X-axis for yaw.  Couldn't get adjusted to it, because it just goes against all the flight sims I grew up with.

However my control scheme does work, and with the fine aiming via the twist on the joystick, I've been able to snipe BA with a light gauss from 800m away.

Different controls work for different people.  I'd say people should try both out and determine what suits them better.

It takes a while to get used to, but like I said, just imagine you're a BA on Extremty with slightly different controls and it's easy as hell to get into

If you really like your way, go ahead and use it, but I'm pretty sure most people play FPS games more than helo sims, so an average person will have a much easier time with my setup (also no joystick required)
