I've managed to get this mod running on my ancient computer within the last couple of weeks, and I am blown away. For once, I get the feeling that I'm running around with HUGE metal things than boxes with paint on them. The addition of non-mech units was awesome... Not just because I can't pilot a mech to save my life due to throttle issues.

Anyhow, I digress...already. I was astounded that I was able to run the game at all. My machine is a Abit KN8 Ultra mobtherboard running an Athlon 64 X2 3800+ (socket 939 baby!), 2GB of DDR, and an 8800GS, Win XP SP3. If I rewound time say... 6-7 years my computer would be blazing fast. You read that right, DDR, without a number after it.
With this hardware, I need to have everything cranked to the bottom settings. Despite this, all of the units look awesome. The only catch is if combat gets moderately heavy, the game starts to chug worse than Thomas the Tank Engine going up a 30% grade.

Because of this, and I'm afraid to think of when my computer will decide to throw out a white flag in surrender. I realize that anything released within the last 3-4 years will be an improvement. If I'm not looking to crank all of my settings up to the max along with my resolution, but want to be thrifty for future upgrades, what would you folks suggest?

I've had the most experience with NVIDIA cards, though if I can get a cheap, relatively powerful ATI card, I won't complain. I'm a college student who doesn't have too much money to spend. If I can buy a mid-higher end motherboard as a base, and get lower-end RAM\CPU\video card which will be an improvement, but will make upgrades down the road cheaper I'm for it. Overall, I don't need miracle-leaps in performance, but if I can up the settings above 800x600, and turn up details here and there, while not bogging my computer down, I'll be happy.

For what I've described, what hardware would you folks suggest. I have other forums that I could post on, but you folk are much better in-tune with what this game requires, and how it performs. Additionally, this is the highest-end game that I play, and I'm not likely to be swayed to play any high-end games except this one.

Any advice you can give would be great! Thanks!

There's nothing you can upgrade that would give you a signficant boost in FPS.  The only options you have are to get more RAM and upgrade the video card.  Even if you bought an ATI 6990 or an Nvidia GTX 590, your CPU would bottleneck your upgrades and you'd only get a marginal FPS increase.

What is your price range for upgrades?

Yeah completely agree with Mitch.  You'd be better off buying a new system, even mid-low premade PC's ($300-400) will have way better specs than what you have now.

Buy windows 7, get 4gb of ram. That would be all you can really do, assuming your motherboard supports that much.

No point buying anything else, because rest of PC will horribly bottleneck the system. Your basically throwing money away upgrading that system for next to no improvment in MWLL.

As others have said, you could buy the cheapest, worst pc ever right now, and it would still blow your current PC to bits in performance.

I would also suggest to save up for a new 500$ PC.

$300-400 is roughly how much I'd be interested in spending. If I can get a motherboard that'll let me upgrade and get a CPU\RAM for it, and perhaps a good video card, I'd be sated for now.

Short of buying a horrifically high-end video card, what would fit that bill if I was in that price range, or should I save up to push the bracket a bit further up? I said that I don't need a monolith of a machine, but something that can play the game at ~1280x1024, or perhaps a bit lower with some of the details on.

Wow... Nice!

Two things: Would it be worth waiting for Christmas for sales? And I still have a stack of IDE HDDs that I still use, do all newer motherboards not have IDE headers any longer?

Don't get a k series CPU on a h61 motherboard. Tis pointless. See what the cheapest z68 mobo is that you can pair with the 2500k. Will be much better down the road.

From experience: The below upgrade only made about a 5-10 FPS difference. CPU was running at about 80% utilization with the GTS; absolutely maxing out when the new card was dropped in.

Athlon X2 6000 w/ WinXP  ->Win7
2GB DDR2 800                 ->6GB DDR2 800
Geforce 8800 GTS 640MB  ->GTX280 1GB

Athlon x2 processors just aren't up to the job.
