I think it will be nearly the same effect that Battlefield Bad Company 2, Battlefield 3, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, Call of Duty Black Ops, and Hello Kitty's Adventure Island have had on MWLL's development and player community.
None of those were Mechwarrior games... And with each day only consisting of 24 hours, I might have to decide for the overall better game in the end.

All entertainment is competition for another entertainment option.  Besides the free release of Mechwarrior 4 Mercs didn't have much an effect.  At any rate its all conjecture and predictions can be left up to the sociologists, psychics, and sociopaths!
Play my free open source web game MiniMek - Urbie Defense!  Its "mega fun" but with mini meks!

Hey, you just ignored my point. :P (bold now)
It's not even called a decision at that point. It is choosing between "stupid" and "incredibly intelligent". :D

Also, I just wanted to mention that a game with fewer bugs and crashes as well as more realism (collision-detection, legs without 'Mechs, dozen more things) would steal a lot of players, me included. But since we don't know what MWO will be like...let's give MWLL a lot of hugs over the next year!

I think the combined arms aspect might be the big selling point of MWLL, compared to MWO. And there are some people who continue to complain about that...

Don't compare MWO to 2011 0.5.3 MWLL.

Who knows what MWLL will look like by the time MWO is released?(if ever)

I don't trust any game that's sold to me as "free to play" while they also are wearing a big shit eating grin. I've seen too many games cash shops turn into "pay to win" shops and have really lost faith in the model. That or they go "well yeah, it -is- free to play as we always said. But you are severely limited in playing compared with our 'premium' members". I want, no, I demand a game to be equal in pay scheme. I do not mind a game having a monthly fee. I want all players to be treated the exact same and the only difference being how much they strive to achieve in game. Call me an old fashioned MMO but I preferred games like Final Fantaasy 11 where there was just the one monthly fee and that was it. No cash shop, no extra fees for bloody anything. If you wanted that new outfit you went out and made it or something.

And I have not heard about a cash shop, but I have no heard how else they plan on paying for this service and all I can think of is this will end in a way I do not wish it to go for MWO.

Right now they seem to have it so purchases will be more cosmetic than anything.

My hopes is in free to play you need to purchase the CD first, then play. Seems more professional, and t hey get their dues.

I'm still in wonder on how long they've been working on this. 2012 seems awfully close even if they were just going with 16 mechs (4 for each weight class) That seems like a lot of work and polish that needs to be done between now and then, not to mention anything about balance and optimization.

Depends. How long have they been working on it from before now?

It'll probably end up running like shit and being unbalanced at release, like most games nowadays.  ::)

I guess it will be up to use veteran "beta" testers to find all the exploits and stomp everyone till they fix it ;)

They did mention that their prototype was done, perhaps they intend to do like World of Tanks and go with a public "beta" where you can buy stuff even in the beta

All things considered it should have no major effect on us, other than increase MW popularity in general. I'm glad to see another MW title out there, but at the moment they will be facing all the same challenges and many of the same goals as ones that have been completed by MWLL for well over a year. I wish them the best of luck and I'm sure they will put out a solid Mech combat game, but their scope is quite different from our game.

Also, I do have to say at this point, how exactly are we even still beta now? The only reason we use "beta" at this point is because its a reflection of what we internally would like to complete with the mod. In terms of content, features, and community usability we are ahead of most mods and many commercial releases. I think the only thing we really don't have the resources for is a solid online platform for keeping stats and clans.

I'd like to hear what our community at this point still considers "beta" about the mod and what they see MWO doing better than us by their release? This is not a challenge, but an honest question so that we can self evaluate.

Thank you Toth. This is the type of response I was hoping to see when I posted this thread. My intent was not a MWLL vs MWO pissing contest, but rather to get honest feedback about how you the developers felt about the announcement.

That is going to be the biggest hurdle, I think.  We do have people working on this stuff, but I personally don't see how MWLL will compete in that aspect.  Well, I am a bit cynical about MWO, it may be a dud, and I might just stick with this.  Actually, I see how a lot of folks will stick with MWLL regardless if they play MWO too.  The biggest advantage MWLL may have is that it can be much more casual, as in I don't need to grind for stuff, and if the grind is dull?

I think most of us still see MWLL as not done, there are bugs that need to be fixed, and there are still some glaring balance issues.  It's funny though, lots of us still play as much as possible, regardless of it being still in a "beta" phase.  :)

I suck!! But WE are AWESOME.  We started a unit.  What's that?!  YOU WANNA TOUCH MY UNIT?!! :P ^^12thVR Recruitment Page(clickthepic) ;)

Its hard to compete with community features when you don't have any income sadly. I do have to say, why does anyone want grind? In MWLL you jump in, and within 15 minutes you can play the game how you want. I'm playing BF3 myself right now, and the grind for random little accessories is driving me nuts... do people honestly want their content gated?

Its a fair point that our balance is not yet perfect (though I think that's the least of our problems); however, I'd like to hear what bugs are still plaguing the community at this point? As far as we know crashes are way down, performance is much higher, and server stability is much higher.

I certainly don't feel MWO is doing anything better than MWLL at this point by their release. We've seen no video's, no screenshots, no price points and barely any information on how the game will function, so not only do I believe that's not a fair question, neither do I believe it would be fair of anybody to make that kind of comparison.

But as for considering MWLL beta, I consider it so due to; assets yet to be added; gameplay systems yet to be implemented; balancing concerns to be addressed; and other changes we know will eventually be coming, like a HUD redesign.
