auto kick on ping should be discontinued!
« on: November 19, 2011, 12:23:56 PM »
I have spoken about similar thing once before

but what i have noticed is that there are not servers available to me to play on all the time
eg "huntress" most of the time has 8+players and is one of the only servers i could join that has players
its pointless running around by yourself!

I cant join this server cos my ping is too high and get kicked for valid reasons of not getting hits with certain weapons etc

However I would rather play the game with "miss shots" then not be able to play the game at all?
besides ive learnt that Xpulse lasers dont work well with my ping but PPC does   :)

Im sure im not the only one with this problem as ive seen others who play with me who also have pings around 300 mark

It could help boost player numbers aswell

I mean if i first downloaded the game and spent a good few hours waiting for the download to finish then install
only to join the game to find that I kicked from the only server available to join?
after a few times trying im sure most people will say "the game sucks cant play it - delete"
when in fact it is an awesome game, but couldnt try it to see it

Yeah, it's increasingly common for me to be unable to play due to players being only on servers with highish pings, and ping-kicks enabled.

If people with high pings stuck to slower assets and mechs, I'd be okay with that.

What is not okay is a guy from Australia or Russia with 290 ping flying around in a warping Fbomb Sulla, then bailing out and warping around as battlearmor.

For every responsible high-ping player there's a dozen or so of these.

Its an unfortunate side effect to not being able to have some players play so that others can have a better experience.  The only real solution is to get more players and servers to locations closer to yourself!  For that the player base size needs a bit of an increase, so its time to put up the fliers and banners to attract more cannon fodder, er, mighty mechwarriors!
Play my free open source web game MiniMek - Urbie Defense!  Its "mega fun" but with mini meks!

I don't understand how you all should be getting kicked from Huntress. It has what? A 265ms limit?

The highest Ping I have (and I'm down the road relatively from Huntresses data center, 15-25ms ping to it) is usually 180-220 on Russian and Australian servers. Huntress is also located closer to the Trans-Atlantic cable than I am. I live in Eastern NC (in North America) for reference.

I'm thinking that your connections are shoddy even for a local server's standard. Make sure the lines to your house are up to date (mine were not 8 years ago and I harped on Time Warner till they replaced them). You CANNOT play a game like this on a satellite or cellphone connection. It needs to be wired. DSL, ADSL, or Cable.

If you're getting above 300ms.. I recommend moving closer to the net civilization, cause you're out in the boondocks. By comparison, connections in Iraq tend to get 350-450 and thats going through Satellite or through Italy first.

The other alternative is to get a datacenter closer to home and getting more locals to play. Can't change the ping limits of the NA servers because they are pretty much meant for the NA players, only reason EU players can get in on it is because of the Trans-Atlantic cable. We'd have one going through Alaska too if world politics weren't shoddy.

I feel your pain, but I must say that I appreciate the rule. If keeps me from having to deal with lag mechs on the field. I'm sorry, but I like it. This means you MUST go and recruit as many people from your side of the world as possible to play MWLL, then you must dominate them. The question still remains, where are you located at on this ball of dust?

Australians get the bad end of the stick, with typically mediocre-at-best connections, and being the farthest position possible from most of the servers (US east coast, western Europe). Even if they are below the ping limit most of the time, a few seconds of poor connection will effectively instantly kick them. I've gotten kicked from Huntress because of lag spikes, and I live within a few hundred miles of it.

Funnily enough Kiwis (New Zealand) get better connections to US servers, I get 150 to West coast servers and 200 to the East coast.

Both playable enough unless I try to use big ACs, LRMs or PPCs.

TW does *not* like doing that, either.

If your ping is high enough that you're getting kicked from a US-based server you need to call your ISP because you've got problems.  During our test phase, NBT's east coast and west coast servers both had <260ms pings to everywhere except central Russia.

Do a traceroute and see what the latency is to the first hop of your ISP.  If it's greater than 15-20ms your ISP needs a wakeup call.

They didn't like me calling every hour on the hour every day even less. But the fault was their own, the lines corroded and had water in them. Funny thing is they forgot to seal them and the next rainstorm the problem came back. They had to come out and redo the lines and did it right. Haven't had an issue since.

If Australians typically have shoddy connections, then they need to get together and fix their infrastructure. I don't want to sound like a dick, but thats a problem they need to fix themselves, we can't lower the standards because it will decrease our QoS (meaning we'll have rubberbanding). They can get away with playing on their local servers as an easy solution though, and we 'Can' still play with them on those servers if we're up around those times.

265ms is a pretty forgiving limit. Most FPS servers require under 150.

Righto then, I'll round up the Aussie MWLL crew tomorrow and after a few beers we'll roll some fibre down the street, whack a digital switch on it, splice it into the trans-Tasman cable, and she'll be right after that.

Well said Virt, throw a cable out to NZ, we get much better pings.

Also you forgot cracking out the barbie at lunchtime, great BBQ weather these days down under.

I can't recall the last time we had a Aussie server up and populated. We don't want to just sit in our little group isolated from the rest of the MWLL community.

I think a modest increase in the kick limit to 270-280 or so would let us all play with little negative issues. I feel for the poor guy playing at that ping but at least they get to play, I'm sure the QoS for all you natives will be very marginally effected, if at all.
