This is exactly why I shun the HaRACer and anything that mixes TAG lasers and Hover. Uber long range -required- pin point precision with the drunken monkey kind of stationary positioning hovercraft has is utterly futile.
Precisely the reason I'd like to see Crouch/Brake mapped to a toggle in hovercraft that shuts off the cushion fans. It would nicely solve the stability issues.
While we're at it, I'd also like to see hovercraft ride a little higher off the ground so as to make them a bit less susceptible to the kind of small debris and broken ground that MWLL mappers seem so fond of. The Heph is better about this than the Harasser at the moment thanks to a hull profile that handles rough terrain better. This might also solve the current issue with hovercraft hitting the water at high speed and getting "trapped" by the water line.
Furthermore, I'd like to see hovercraft with the ability to side-slip. It makes sense, and a bit more agility (not speed) would help the survivability of hovercraft immensely.
The hovers are always more stable when moving than when stopped (yes I know... lol crysis physics)
Assuming you're on flat, level ground, yes. How often does that happen in-game? Heck, even in DV, the action tends to concentrate in the built-up areas, and any TAGger wants to be up high to maximize his line of sight.
Or set the throttle to 10 percent or so and cruise forward at a snails pace, as long as the ground is resonably flat you should have a much steadier firing platform.
I'll have to give this a try. I normally dislike constant-throttle on vehicles, but this idea has merit, so long as I'm not playing on one of the "lol BUMPZZ!!!" maps that are so popular.
Aside everything else, I'd like to see hovercraft get a bit more weighty. Turning radii feel about right (if anything, the Heph's could stand to be a bit tighter), but the physics are too floaty for my taste. Ever seen an LCAC move? That's an 80-ton (175 with full payload) hovercraft that's only a bit slower than the Heph. Yeah, the handling is a bit loose, but this is NOT a vehicle that's going to bounce over onto its head when it drives over a smallish rock.
