It would seem that I can download the 5.5GB trial of Crysis Wars; so I was thinking of downloading that now until I get a copy of Crysis Warhead.  Once I get the Warhead, then can I activate Crysis Wars?  ;D
Squibby, he asked this at first, and yeah he'll have to buy it anyway. He can just use it to install Crysis Wars, and then later on buy Crysis Warhead just for its key. That trial version is the same as a retail one, it just doesn't includes a CD Key, he can only play LAN games.

Umm... probably not, but feel free to try. If it does, you may have found a way to make this mod 100% free, so no one will complain
Well CoffiNail, a Crysis Wars mod called Casus Belli suggests the trial version alone of Crysis Wars would be enough to play online that mod, but that's because they're bypassing the CD Key check, which probably isn't an option for the MWLL devs.

And Cherno, that must be from an early trial Crytek made. They had a system to generate keys in their website to then use in that trial version, but the keys only had a limited time.

Oh and est1895, yep those links are ok. You can then download the Crysis Wars 1.5 Patch and install it. Then you can start installing MWLL. You won't be able to play online until you have a Crysis Warhead CD key, which you have to buy.

Squibby and Bruno007 are right!  In fact, Half-price books won't sell Crysis Warhead or Maximum edition due to DRM protection.  Does that mean that I can only buy it brand new and not used? :'(

Can I just buy the cd key from EA?   :o

Maybe, but the price difference between a brand new or used shouldn't be that much. I've seen Crysis Warhead at around $12 dollars in Amazon.com, and at $5 in the co.uk version. Those are prices for a hardcopy.

If you want a digital version from Steam or Origin its probably more expensive, and you can't just buy the key there.

Well...what should I look for then.  What did that guy mean about DRM protection?  And has anyone here bought a used version and it worked?

I think you'll only find DRM protection in Crysis Warhead, not Crysis Wars. You're limited to install the game 5 times if you don't deauthorize your previous installs. So forget that, it won't bother you.

If you buy a used version you may risk getting a CD Key already in use by another player, but that's probably a low chance. They're not restricted to one use only, but one CD Key can't be used at the same time for 2 players. Its your choice. I would go for a new hardcopy, since its cheap.

Yes, that is correct.

Via tweakguides.com:

Due to the high levels of piracy for the original Crysis, Crytek and EA have implemented the SecuROM copy protection system [into Crysis Warhead] which incorporates an online activation component.
  • Whether using Steam or the DVD version, there is no disk check component. That is, you do not need to keep a DVD in the drive for the game to run.
  • Immediately after installing Crysis Warhead, whether on Steam or via DVD, you will need to connect to the Internet to allow SecuROM to authenticate/activate your copy. This process takes literally a couple of seconds.
  • Connection to the Intenet for activation of Crysis Warhead is only required upon installation, and when installing updates. At other times you do not need to be connected to the Internet to play Warhead.
  • Crysis Wars, the multiplayer component of Crysis Warhead, does not need activation, only authentication online using the CD Key which comes printed on the back of your game manual.
  • There is a 5 activation limit for Crysis Warhead, but there is no limit for Crysis Wars. The 5 activation limit for Warhead is not the same as 5 installations - you can uninstall and reinstall the game multiple times on the same PC and not use up any more activations. Only if your PC hardware has significantly changed, or you reformat your drive, or upgrade the OS, or try to install on a different computer, will an additional activation be used.

Crysis goes on sale over steam every few months, if you want the absolutely lowest price a guaranteed to work, you could just wait for a sale.  However this mod is worth the steam normal price.

Sorry I misunderstood your question,

Also I didn't realise the trial version worked that way...

Anyway, Steam does still list it, sorry for mentioning Origin (lol). 30 USD for the max edition from steam here. probably cheaper on steam in the US.
