Help Vic improve his MWLL FPS!
« on: December 26, 2011, 10:06:58 PM »
Ok so, I went from x2 9600 GT's in SLI to a GTX 570 for christmas.

I got almost no performance increase in MWLL while my other games were night and day.

The rest of my rig is as follows:

Q9450 2.6 @ 3.2GHZ
8Gig 1066 DDR ram
XFX 780i Nvidia Mobo

Now, my next target was to up the OC on my CPU. However, upon looking at the core temps (which were going to 81C on load and idling at 55) there was no way that was an option.
I figured something was wrong when no matter what I set the voltages or clock on I was getting said temps.
I finally looked at reseating the CPU after 3 years because I had some local outfit do it for me and I was never sure how well they did it.
After we took it off we pretty much found a dusty, crusty thin coat of what was once a paste and my bro thinks it probably wasn't even making contact anymore. (doh!)

We cleaned off the old paste and applied new and reseated, my temps are now 40C idle and 50C full load. That is immediate without giving the paste time to bake and with my old inefficient overclock.

Now, my next step is to actually OC it which I'm targeting about 3.5 for now.

If that does not improve performance I'm wondering what my next target could be?

The thing I need help with now is some autoexec.cfg from the CCC Wars 3.0 switcher.

For some reason mine is borked and no matter what I set it to it sets it to shittiest lvl 1...

I would be thankful if someone could attach a lvl 4, lvl 4+, and screenshot level exec files with Vsync enabled and the physics set to core 3. :)

sadly the best upgrade is to upgrade your cpu, despite it being a relatively strong one.  definitely oc and you will see an immediate improvement.  What's your resolution?  Next thing to do is go line by line and pick things that are cpu intensive and simply lower them.  Off the top of my head sys_physics_cpu=2 should put physics on a separate core that won't be used by crysis.  If you're willing, it's worth the upgrade to a 2500k.  You can get it for roughly 180+ motherboard 100+ ram 40ish=320.  I'm guessing you can get at least 150-200 for the parts you have now.  100-150 bucks for one of the best cpus money can buy is a solid deal

My 2500k @ 4.6ghz bottlenecks my GTX580 without SLI (In MWLL no other games thank God ;) ). I think that says it all.

Well I "got the card for christmas" only half way, as I paid for half and my parents paid for half.

So I'm not really willing to spend money on other parts yet... maybe in another year and a half.

For now I'm going to test OCing to 3.66 GHZ, which should be plenty. Windows is already loading up far faster.

I would like to get my hands on those CCC .cfg files though. >.>

I play at 1680x1050 btw/

I've found that a ccc config for one person doesn't work for another because it maximizes cpu/gpu/total system performance.  If you want the fps you have to get it yourself! Go through line by line man, I've done it numerous times.  Load up a map, check fps.  Lower a chunk of lines and go back to see if you have any fps gain.  Since you don't want to spend money (and honestly man, the best thing to do is use the money for that graphics card on a cpu) you need to get a better cpu cooler for 20-30 bucks and oc your cpu as high as it can go until temps/stability stop you.

Yeah, I made the same mistake as you

Upgraded GPU, played other games, loved it, played MWLL, WTF NO DIFFERENCE?
Pretty much unless your GPU is really really shit, upgrading CPU will give a far bigger boost

I've got my Q6600 overclocked at 3.2Ghz and its "good enough", but as others have said you gotta get one of the new CPUs to get almost completely faultless FPS
Play my free open source web game MiniMek - Urbie Defense!  Its "mega fun" but with mini meks!

If you have a quad-core, I recommend setting the affinity of the windows' process "audiodg" to cores 2 and 3, along with other choice processes. That improved my performance a fair bit, though it was already pretty faultless. There's also a console command that you can use to set the affinity of some in-game stuff, like physics, forgot what they are tho.

Do keep in mind that Crysis primarily only uses 2 cores.

(and as the others have noted, Crysis was built around video cards that are like, i dunno, 5 years old?-upgrading vid card really won't help)
When will full game/demo/beta be released?
We're planning a beta release in the next *very* few weeks. At this time, we can't be more specific. Please stop asking.

No, I will not stop asking.

"Help Vic improve his MWLL FPS!"

Hell no, you're giving me a hard time already :P

I'll wait for Ivy Bridge in April. Still running a Q6600 and a gtx260... I'd love to enjoy this mod on high settings.

I tried my GTX260 with my 2500k (While I sent back my 580's for testing) and it ran games waaaay too well. Couldn't max game settings in most games but damn couldn't complain how well it ran anything on medium/high with 40+fps easily. I miss that card so much.

How exactly do you go about doing this? is it easier just to set crysis itself to another process?

Ctrl + Alt +Del ---> Task Manager ---> Processes tab ---> find process ---> Right click ---> Set Affinity

Affinity resets every time your PC starts, which is annoying.

/e SHOULD NOTE THIS ONLY WORKS IN WINDOWS 7/VISTA, MAYBE EVEN ONLY WIN7 PRO/ULTI
/e SHOULD NOTE I'M DERPING A LITTLE TOO MUCH, JUST FIGURE IT OUT, K? IT WORKS, TRUST ME

If you have a quad-core, I recommend setting the affinity of the windows' process "audiodg" to cores 2 and 3

I was curious about this, so I searched for a way to specify core affinity for windows services. No luck, but I did find some ways to set affinity for processes via command line.

For starting new processes:
c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe /C start /affinity 1 notepad.exe
This could be used to make a MWLL shortcut starting Crysis.exe on some defined cores. I'm not sure if it would be useful...

For already-running processes, I found an old utility: http://retired.beyondlogic.org/consulting/processutil/processutil.htm
process -a audiodg.exe 1100
This should set audiodg to cores 2 and 3, but I'm still using XP so I can't test it. It works for me (on other services), but you might run into permissions issues.
It's worth a try, you could put that in a start-up script ("along with other choice processes") and be done with the annoyance of setting affinity manually.

Using the 'start' command isn't really useful.  It often creates as many issues as it solves as paths don't always link up like they should.

Why not simply disable audiodg's protected status in the registry?
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Audio.  Create a new DWORD 'DisableProtectedAudioDG' and set it to 1.  Run 'net stop audiosrv' and 'net start audiosrv'.  Open task manager with admin or SYSTEM elevation and set the affinity.  QED

It may take a SYSTEM elevated task manager but you can set the affinity for every program and service except the kernel itself.

Oh btw, AudioDG is protected because it's a core part of the DRM subsystem.  So long as it's unprotected via the registry mod above you'll no longer be able to decode DRM'd audio.  I imagine there are similar consequences for tampering with it after it's already running.  There's really no need to set affinity for audiodg, when you're playing a game it uses so little CPU it's not even worth the hassle of limiting it.

I set the affinity of AudioDG off cores 0 & 1 because I'm on TS/listening to music while playing MWLL. The combined total of these other applications makes for 10% processor usage on all cores when unaffiliated with cores 2 and 3.
