Micro Pulse Laser?
« on: December 30, 2011, 07:39:26 AM »
Are we going to be seeing it anytime soon? It IS one of the basic weapons on the Elemental.

What niche would it fill? If anything I would have thought an ER version of the existing small laser would have a better chance of being used.

I was thinking about micro pulse lasers recently how convenient this thread appears.

I look forward to BA MicroPL.

As for what niche they would fill, ahem..... Duck and cover tactics they have shorter fire time than the standard ba laser so you would fire a burst and take cover leaving you exposed for a shorter time VS the standard laser.

The standard BA SBL takes around or less than 1 second to discharge as it is.... also bearing in mind that pulse lasers have shorter range than beam lasers, and micros have smaller range than smalls, so this theoretical weapon might have a range roughly the same or slightly longer than the micro heavy laser, without any of the bonus damage.. pretty sure I'd rather have an ERSBL and a MPPPC than a heavy laser and a short(er) range sbl that happens to discharge a little faster.

For the more skilled players that BA SBL discharge time is all they need to kill me.

I'm for the ba micro pulse laser so i will by default argue for it.

Although right now i don't see it as a high priority on the asset list but i do think the devs will start a BA weapon development cycle where we will see new BA weapons like an lbx2, ba guass, and ba pulse laser.

If i were to guess i would say the weapon would have 200 meter range and behave similarly if not the same to the current Mech SPL, damage output would be about 25% to 30% more than the sbl. it would cost 6k

As long as that doesn't "fill" some "limit" on new BA weapons, I have no issue with them making it - I'm just saying if they were debating about putting ONE new BA weapon in I'd rather it be an ERSBL, since there are already multiple weapons that perform in the range bracket of this theoretical micro pulser. Otherwise add both, I'll just never use the pulser.

How about a better idea than a shorter discharge - Make 'em an energy based BA-AC2. Continuous fire, accurate unlike the AC2, except it overheats faster and would probably have a miserable range of around 250m, so no sniping from 1000m that you can pull off with the AC2.

energy based ac2? like uhmmm a ba x pulse ??? or a plasma cutter ? ^^

I tried sniping with ac2 at other BA and saw the damage dropout was so much that it was faster to go over there and kill them point blank.

We had a BA Pulse Laser in the alpha prior to the first beta release and it never felt right or different enough from the regular Beam Laser to warrant inclusion.  We tweaked around with refire rates, ranges, pulse counts, etc. and it never was unique enough.  This likely because BA don't track heat like the vehicular assets do.  Short of a major change to allow that there is no point to adding a weapon that would be considered fluff.

We have big plans for BA going forward, you aren't missing anything by not having the BA micro pulse - trust me.

So the problem is that nobody feels like putting it in?

If someone gave you a model would you do it?

And what about a regular small pulse laser?

That would have the same range, and more damage.

I think he meant the weapon behaved almost exactly like the BA beam laser only it pulsed a bit, so there was no point including it.

speaking entirely from a BA player standpoint I would actually prefer weapons that hit harder and less often anyway because that decreases the amount of time I'm exposed to enemy fire... unless of course I'm actually fighting another BA, in which case there's other weapons for that.

No, it really isn't. Lots of useless weapons just make the weapon list cluttered and annoying for players who don't know what's good and what isn't.

What if they added 50 new varieties of Bear autocannons which all did more or less the same amount of damage but with different ranges and fire rates, but at the end of the day, were still Bear goddamn autocannons?

Precisely. All that'd be missing after that would be a gimped browser-addon-based game launcher/server browser.
