Urbie Defense (Alpha playable release)
« on: December 30, 2011, 05:01:39 PM »
This one's a work in progress using what I've learned for HTML5 from Bouncing Urbie.  It is now in a playable state.

Urbie Defense
Defend your lance of four Urbanmechs that have become separated from their company.  The clan battle armor are coming in from all directions and all must be destroyed to survive!

Play Here

After you download the zip file, extract it somewhere on your computer.  After that just open UrbieDefense.htm in the latest version of the Chrome, Firefox, or IE web browser.  It may also work in Safari, haven't tried that yet, but it does appear to run best in Chrome.

I almost put the Beta badge on this, however I'm still considering it an Alpha because the collision detection can be pretty bad, so I have decided to implement Box2d physics for the beta.  For now its still perfectly playable and fun so I thought I'd share :)  As for the framerate, its expected to always be around 60 fps no matter how fast your computer is.  If you get something way off from that let me know, as the game may not play as intended.  Once I implement Box2d I should be able to write it so its not so frame dependent.

Hehe, nice to see you keep true to the hexagonal design. And even height levels :)

Actually the background map is a static picture (so no height elevations or anything to consider), its just I'm not an artist so all assets are from MegaMek.  Once I'm to a certain point with it I may start looking for some artists to contribute replacement art assets.

Here's some tips to making it to higher waves, though thus far I've never completed past Wave 6

- weapons fire converges at the location where you click, so be sure to aim just ahead of the movement of the enemy you're shooting at

- click like a madman

- don't use a touchpad

I just got it so you can play without first having to download it. I've update the first post and here's the link as well:

http://minimek.sourceforge.net/

Also after some feedback I realized Wave 1 was too slow and boring, so I shifted the waves down 1 so it starts to get hard by Wave 3 or 4.

just me, but how about a slight increase in difficulty over a single wave but make the waves longer.
then make the increase in difficulty more drastic in higher levels...
an idea that just came to my mind:
how about giving each of the urbies a single shot for their AC10 slow projectile, but high damage and splash.
Ammo would be replenished at the end of a wave.

initially I thought: "powerups?!"
but "we" probably wouldn't want that...
If at first you don't succeed try again, and if you don't try again, you'll be hit in the face with a shovel!

I'm currently thinking of the following for future versions:

1. more gradual difficulty, also possibly make it so it takes 3 elementals to "swarm" disable a single urbanmech
2. "powerups" that are earned as you complete X number of waves.  These would be as canon as possible, so for instance you could choose to have a UAC10 or LBX10 instead of the normal AC10,
3. possibly introducing an alternate fire weapon, the small laser and its possible variants small pulse, small heavy, etc. as upgrades
4. limited use "blow everything up on the screen" ability, or at least something that effects a large area, like those bombs in the Raiden arcade games.

Though I kindof want to stick to the 30 second wave times with time to breathe in between, but if unlockables enter the fray I may find I need to extend it to 1 minute per wave.  Just have to kinda try it out and see what it does to the gameplay.

being able to deploy an atlas that then shoots everything in a certain arc but also gets attacked by elementals (so you have to defend him) would be cool as well
