Wallpaper
« on: January 07, 2012, 08:02:14 PM »
Hello,

It's been a very long tme since i've made a wallpaper so I wanted to get your opinion on the lastest one i've made.

It's a bit "raw" so far. I was going for a technical sort of look.

What do you think? what could be changed?

Also, I hope the guys at MWLL don't mind if i used there concept picture of the Shadowcat. my modeling skills are not that good.

(This page will have updates showing the resent changes made so you get a good idea how it started and see how is evolves over time).

Personally, I'd take the grid floor underneath the mech, and have it as a background, such as a grid floor extending out to the horizon.  The text and other effects that make up the rest of the image are just begging for different transparency levels, but in order to do that, you'd need something as a basis for that transparency.

If you think about it as foreground, middle, and background elements, the hud/technical readout is foreground, and thus some parts could have different transparency levels in order to focus on the middle, which is the mech.  Unfortunately, right now there doesn't seem to be a background element to the wallpaper, and instead just a black solid.  Extending and fading the grid out to the vanishing point would give the image a nice background as well.

Nice work though!  I like where this is going.

Don't forget the apostrophe on the word " 'Mech " in that image. That, or spell it out as BattleMech (or in this case, OmniMech).
When will full game/demo/beta be released?
We're planning a beta release in the next *very* few weeks. At this time, we can't be more specific. Please stop asking.

No, I will not stop asking.

looks good so far...

little feedback:
the background around the Shadowcat has a little static to it while the rest of the background is clean
looks kinda wierd, inconsistent at the least

mech is not a proper word. use battlemech or omnimech, or 'mech. the grid thing seems a little odd. don't abbreviate weapon names. i like the blue color you are using though, it looks very electrical, for lack of a better word. fitting for such a high grade machine.

edit: going to need a bigger res :P

Going to disagree with the rest, I dont think the grid should spread and fade. Military hardware, especially clan hardware, makes me think of clean lines and sharp edges. Sides, some black space gives the eye a place to rest. I do think it should be a given size, a point of reference or scale, to compare other mechs to if you do more papers like that. Take that vulture in your sig for instance, the grid under it and the grid under the scat have different proportions. Something like a meter squared and labeled as such in fine print somewhere would work.

Thanks for all the feed back. I think i have an idea about where i want to take this wallpaper and improve it.

I'll try and make a few other with different Mechs as i'm sure not everyone is a fan of the Shadowcat.

I'll post soon with an update  :)

Ok, i've made some changes to this wallpaper and it seems to have really improved the whole feel of it. I've pretty much started from scratch and changed how it was laid out. There is more of a layered affect now rather than it just looking like one flat image and i've smoothed out the Shadowcat texture to give it more of a clean look. I've also change some of the "Tech" design so they don't take over the whole picture, plus I added some more details about the Mech.

As always, comments are welcome :)

my only critique would be to alter the grid plane so that it is at the same angle as the feet so it looks like it's standing on it.  currently it looks like it's angled down too much.  Other than that it looks awesome!

Thanks for the comment Cujo! The Grid has now been realigned to match the position of the mech's feet. I've also made the lines cutting off the black boarder sections stronger so it shows up a bit more.
