Windows 8 and MWLL
« on: January 12, 2012, 09:28:44 PM »
I don't know how many people ever tried new monster from Small and Softs but I decided to give it a try.

I use this Windows 8 installation just for gaming purposes. So I running MWLL and few other games on partition with Win 8.

My general opinion is that Win 8 is slower then Win 7, even with right drivers and stuff, then it is buggy. Not that severe but when you CTD several times in a row in a middle of dogfight it is really annoying  >:(
So my recommendation would be NOT to use Win 8 with MWLL
I going to switch back to Win 7.

As far as I understand it, the Windows 8 that is out at the moment is a developers release and not the actual beta release candidate.

Personally I see no reason to switch to 8. 7 is by far the best Windows ever, 8 is supposedly a natural progression to keep up with technology. RC's of Windows have always been buggy, painful, and angering to most people who use them. I applaud you for trying it, I also applaud you for switching back to 7!

Windows 8 isn't even in public beta yet.  Attempting to gauge the final speed or stability of an OS at the pre-beta stage is premature.  Windows 7 wasn't very stable either at that point.

Wait until the RC stage before doing any serious testing.

Btw, agreed with Werewolf that there is little or no reason to upgrade.  Even with a free copy from MSDN I likely won't be upgrading to it.  Windows 7 is extremely stable and bug/hassle-free, even OSX can't manage that anymore.

I'm on the boat of why upgrade?  Win 7 is pretty awesome.  It'll probably have the same type of shelf like win XP did.

Win8 looks to me to be too catered to tablet and touch screen format type PCs to be a serious consideration for a modern gaming PC

I imagine there'll be a way to turn all that off.  If not there won't be any appeal to the business world and that's a giant chunk of money they'd be shunning.

Honestly, there hasn't been anything to really say it would be a good enterprise upgrade.  Heck my company is just NOW rolling out win 7 to the field.  I really don't think they'll be wanting to buy a new OS for a couple of years.

My feel is that Win 8 won't be well accepted (at least on the enterprise side)

agreed. I see win 8 as Microsofts way of trying to create a more portable platform, win7 is a brilliant operating system for commercial and main pc use, win 8 just seems to make things more touch screen and Small format friendly.

Windows 8 has some really nice ideas and concepts in there.
Depends entirely on how well they will be implemented again.
Also, seeing how it's supposed to work on ARM stuff, they had to have made sure it uses much less system ressources.
I have heard rumors of windows 8 needing 50% less RAM compared to win7 for example.
Which is always a good thing.
And if they can get it to work propperly on portable devices so one can install windows software(java, megamek on tablet, here i come!) on them, all the better.
And maybe they will use it as the OS on their NextBox too. If they can really get it set up like this, then they will have a unified system for Console, Portable and Desktop.

Also, the System-Reset and Refresh Options are nice to have.

The Metro UI is, as far as i know, only able to be switched off by editing the reg a bit.

In the current preview version at least.

Yeah I am 99% certain that crap will be disabled for desktop.

If not I will be sticking with 7 or going with Linux Mint for all my PC tasks other than gaming.

on ARM computers and tablets, you will only be able to use windows 8 as they are locking you in. Goddamnit microsoft, we were all distracted by apple, you didnt have to go and pull that crap.

You do realize that the ARM version is probably an entirely different than the x86 and x86-64 version that PCs will use, right?  If ARM ran native x86/x86-64 code we'd be using Windows7 on our Android phones.
