Unlink vehicle turret rotation
« on: January 21, 2012, 03:52:46 PM »
Surely many have noticed how difficult it is to fire on the move with vehicles. I think the biggest problem is that turret rotates along with the hull.

In real tanks the turret is not affected by the hull orientation while the gunner is holding the handle, which allows fluid tracking of targets on the move.

Been suggested before. I don't remember the answer, though.
When will full game/demo/beta be released?
We're planning a beta release in the next *very* few weeks. At this time, we can't be more specific. Please stop asking.

No, I will not stop asking.

Mechs too have that linked. So, I don't see the problem.

99% sure it's impossible or would require a LOT of work

And it would make it easier to aim at stuff. And as this is a game first, you will always need at least a tiny bit of skill to play the game.
Btw. todays weapon systems have ranges, far greater than 1km. Just saying. Gameplay >> Realism.

Also, why just vehicles? Mechs suffer from the same difficulty. (Not that I want it changed.)

Mechs move very smoothly in this game compared to tanks that bob and turn and do triple-backflips when there's a pebble on the ground.

Not really, mechs stay level as they walk. They don't have to adjust vertically for the terrain as tanks do.

I wouldn't be opposed to some automatic pitch correction for tank turrets, but complete stabilisation wouldn't be interesting, as -SM-SUCKER points out.
I think the tanks' handling is a much worse problem, I seldom use them because the way they (do not) turn, their weak torque, how they slide down form hills and the occasional ridiculous bouncing. I wouldn't mind more nervous and manoeuvrable tanks, it would more than offset any difficulties with the turret handling.

Ah, yes, I was only thinking about horizontal rotation.

Stablizing systems for turrets or 'Mech torsos are lostech in the 31st century. That, or they're banned in the Ares conventions for making warfare too easy. Or, they require handwavium for construction and the deposits of that ran out centuries ago in the entire known space, Kerensky Cluster included.

No, but apparently people who can program are.

No, it's just that we know our value, and nobody has enough c-bills.

If your lasers could shoot to the horizon and your weapons were stabilized and we reversed all the silly little 'lostech' rules that limit the game we'd be playing a very, very different game. Lets not go into the fact like a 5 ton object falling with speed can cause dramatic damage to any mech and toss in a rocket engine speeding that 5 ton engine to absurd speeds the entire game would be launchers and spotters dropping bombs and hyper velocity bombs/missiles on each other.
