Oh no !!! Don't ask that!!! It is far easier to complain about a given artist concept than to actually CREATE something. It fits the mental ILK of most people just to sit back and criticize in their own infinite wisdom about how a given design is bad or inadequate in some way shape or form.

Oh, I make stuff. Just not that stuff, and, honestly, comments from those who know what they are talking about are often more asinine than those who don't. Often, not always, and the difference otherwise is, indeed, measurable, and an informed critique is better than an uninformed one. If you're looking for criticism from your competition-well, what are you, a goddam masochist?

..

Guess I really should just say that openly discriminating against your critiques is a sure way to disappointment in the real world...
When will full game/demo/beta be released?

No, I will not stop asking.

That's pretty much what I thought when I first saw it.

Do not take me wrong. Rather like the look really... but yeah when I saw the arm shield I instantly thought of the VF-11. The shield on the VF-11 always struck me as a bit odd in that it was mounted along side the arm instead of like how a human would normally wear a shield. One would think with the thing being able to transform from plane to gerwalk to battloid mode it should also be able to twist the shield (making it easier to protect vital parts with it).

/Merf - Always liked the weird rough design of the VF-11 over the later model VFs

'Oh no, it has an anime element present within it!'

Battletech was originally inspired by anime like designs. Especially these early humanoid mecha.

In fact its the fans hatred for anything anime design which has led to this particular centurion not coming out looking like a centurion - FD has done his best to compress it into a more militaristic, western style which does just not work for these types of mechs which NEED to keep the default humanoid look they started with if they want to keep to the original style.

I like alot of the design itself, and the shield arm doesnt bother me. I could completely see a battlemech using such a shield, especially given that melee combat is hardly uncommon within the BT universe. I like the rest of the curves, and its great and consistent with the other designs. I like the fact it has kept the general humanoid form, just to make the people who moan about their giant robots looking like giant robots annoyed.

However, theres something i just cant look past in this design that is going to irk me. You can see that in an attempt to militarise the centurion, to cut down on that aforementioned influence, we've lost alot of the dynamic feel of the original. For example, the head no longer exists as a separate entity, instead having been crushed down into the torso area.

As a poster on the thread stated:

'Black Sunder 9 hours ago

Why was the ability to turn its head taken away? In fact none of the mechs shown so far have heads anymore.'

For me, personally, i would have found it much more TRO faithful, and also more intimidating, if the head had been kept as in the original on top of the redesigned body. The hunched shoulders, along with the head , make the centurion look like its hunchbacked, and crippled, as if it would have trouble co-ordinating its arms. As it is, it feels slightly too heavy for what it is.

This worked really well with the Atlas, but doesnt so much here.

Having said that, i fully intend on still taking this sucker for a drive or two in MWO. The centurion always was a bro mech, and im sure itll play well within the game.  Its not an AWFUL design by any means - its visually pleasing, its just i was not expecting the final result and hold mixed views on it. Ive liked all the other redesigngs, especially the hunchback alot, so one 'decent' out of 'fantastic' is pretty good considering how radical the visual aesthetic has changed. :)

New idea- would I be able to use an external hard drive to add RAM and/or improve gigahertz?

The one thing that irks me? The beefy torso and arms, with the hunched armored cockpit were designed for an assault mech, The torso actuator, pelvis and legs were made for a Raven. The Centurion is neither of those.

Lets find out how it actually looks in game before we get overly critical. Wouldn't surprise me one bit if the arm shield is gone and the head is more pronounced.

Ugh... not sure how I feel. The armshieldthing is dumb, the legs look like they're from an anime mech, and the head fin somehow looks even dumber than the TRO/miniature one. That said, the right arm and the torso look badass and if I look around the fin I actually kind of like the way its head looks. And for the love of the Spaghetti Monster, DEM SHOULDERS. I love those shoulders. I wish I could make love to those shoulders and make lots of beautiful baby shoulders. Er... what.

The old Centurion was always one of my faves, partly due to its appearance.  It looked tall, lean, proud, professional, militaristic, and it had a commanding presence.  It looked like its namesake.

While this new one certainly looks badass, it also looks...well, not quite like a Centurion.  It looks like an alien version of a Centurion that kind of hulked out or something.  While it certainly still has the appearance (somewhat) of a Roman Centurion, especially with the new faceplate, head crest, its 'shield' on the left arm, the 'broadsword' appearance of the right arm, and the plate on the left shoulder.

That said, it lost some of the 'unspoken intent' that the old Centurion projected.  It no longer carries the commanding presence of the original, and it does not look as proud, tall, or lean.

My suggestion, not as an artist (which, I am not), but as a Battletech fan: if the hip/pelvic area could be made more lean, and the torso a little taller/narrower, with longer upper leg sections, this would be awesome.

Just my $0.02, of course.
