Its a blunt explanation with best intention. In case that you'd require more knowledge/information on subject, I recommend crydev and then asking more on a way on how we decided to use that system as nda prevents me on giving more info.
Judging by that logic, you really cold have 2k maps on everything but that's ok as long as you don't see it --> everything could have 20k+polys with many of 2k maps on it. Every bit counts. Ill rephrase my explanation attempt. They have additional geo, lods will help
to an extent. Cockpit would/does require additional texture map and a big one at that. Texture memory taken, does not go away just by putting lods as additional lod's cost. At this point there is ways going abut that like I said, just not enough resources in the team to do just that, even without completing them in first place.
