Physical combat
« on: March 23, 2008, 09:11:34 PM »
Is something that none of the MW games have ever addressed beyond DFAs and ramming.   I'm curious as to whether or not there are any plans on implementing punches and/or kicks.

I've been wondering if it were possible to have some kind of context sensitive melee button.  Like, if i aim my crosshairs at a low to the ground target (mech legs, fallen over mechs, tanks, and infantry), and press melee, my mech will stop and deliver a kick.  If i aim above that at another mech's torso, or REALLY low flying vtol, my mech will punch (provided its got working arms)

i always find it silly when you've got mechs slamming into each other out of desperation or ineptitude but are unable to do anything other than unload weapons point blank, it'be much cooler of melee combat was traded instead, with the advantage of being much more likely to knock an opponent over.  To be fair though, tanks should be more suited to 'shinning" a mech to knock it over with a sucessful full speed ram to counter the fact that they'd be so very kickable.

thoughts?

Yes, we do plan on adding some mele capability to the mechs. As we're writing the code however, it'll come down to if we can actually get it working correctly in time for beta testing, mabey even just late beta testing since I really want them to double as rock-em-sock-em robots...

That is awesome. I always wondered how a mechwarrior game would play with proper melee attacks.

Just don't go too crazy!  No spinning whirl kicks for Mechs.    :P

Though a foot stomp could be cool, if the other Mech limps afterwards.    :D

yeah, i wouldn't want to see some crazy gundam/macross mech kung fu.  Just a brutal stomp kick and haymaker punch when possible.

Or if we want to go elaborate, it'd be sweet to pick up discarded mech limbs and beat mechs to death with them.

The Axeman will finally make it's debut with jj and it's vibro axe! ;D  But yeah it's been a long time coming for melee mech to finaly make it into a mechwarrior/battletech game.

Agreed, we don't want this to turn into Mech kung fu even though that would be interesting.  I'd say keep it limited to stomping and using arms as blunt instruments.

It's be pretty dificult for a stone rhino to shoulder throw a catapult. No just a very basic punch or kick/stomp is all I'm talking about.

A simple melee attack that can knock over the other mech would be the most useful since you can then deal a lot of damage as your enemy is getting back up.

You would have to be limited to knocking over mechs that are smaller than yours though, you wouldn't want a light 30 ton mech running around and tipping over 100 ton mechs.  :D

None of that stuff we saw in the clan wars? More like the Fedcom civil war?

i don't think it should be as simple as just knocking stuff over if you are bigger. as that doesn't address what will happen if you have 2 smaller mechs pounding on a larger one, or 2 equal weight ones attacking each other.

I'd say just something that deals damage according to its size, in addition to inertia according to size.  So its not a guaranteed thing if you are gonna knock an opponent over, but it is more likely than most weapons to do so, and being bigger helps, but is not the end all be all.
