To Leer, Defender, Twink, Tax_Man, Knightcrawler, and Focht for the ideas. I will look into them once I get my boys new system built after Haswell comes out. Until then, it would be nice to have the option to turn it off.

Again Thanks!

Thanks are appreciated, but just to be clear - there will be no development effort put towards chat disablement by the MWLL team.

Maybe you could call it a 'Bug" fix instead....

Just to be clear, I really wanted this for my kids to enjoy all this hard work.

I still find it interesting that the idea of fighting a war with massive weapons like mechs, gibbing, although armored, infantry with autocannon seems to be perfectly okay with children while swearing via chat is not acceptable.

Personally i'm not entirely sure the two issues can be joined as easily as that.
Were "the game" a non violent one, like a car racing Game, would some of the visceral adult themes Werewolf has described be acceptable in chat ?

For whatever reason our culture has a popular tolerance for fantasy violence.

Case in point, i was watching the clone wars yesterday, and it struck me that for a kids cartoon, it has some heavy philosophical questions.
The clones are basically a slave race, bred as disposable cannon fodder, and yet each one has a personality

It thus promotes a caste system where one class of person is treated as property. disposable property at that.

It would seem that in the context of fantasy, a multitude of sins can be forgiven.

I dont see MWLL as any more or less suitable for children than clone wars as an example.

Drilling down to the seperate chat issue,

My kids learned about swearing from a very early age and know it's wrong, however my children don't know about anal sex, masturbation, gay love and all the other "Fun" yet inappropriate shit that is said in chat, nor do I want them to at their young ages.

I think thats a (all things being relative and from his perspective) valid point, those sorts of dialog have nothing to do with this or any game that i play.
He didnt say you all need to stop this stuff, just asked for a client end option (of which there is unfortunately for him little to none) to disable it.

The devs have said they have no plans to implement a fix, and thats the end of the matter.

Several of the guys i played CBT tabletop and mercs with have passed away in recent years, so i like the idea of the next generation of fans entering the arena.

I hope he is able to find some working fix from the advice thats been given

You have to understand the code of duty and honor that rules those who pilot these engines of destruction. Placing such an awesome weapon in the hands of an individual implies a similar gesture of trust

When my son (clev btw) was younger I'd just tell him to ignore those folks who were being asshats and he did ok.  Trust me they hear worse or as bad on the playground.  Armor your kid against it because you're not going to stop it all.  But he was 11 or 12 by then, not 8 etc.  At 8 he still didn't really understand the difference between real and fantasy violence.

There are definitely a few younger players in the playerbase, who have latched onto mwll with a vengeance.

Luckily there aren't too many folks who "talk shit" during a game.

My suggestion would be to tell him to ignore it, and maybe put both father and son on team speak where things seem a little more sober.

Reading this makes me sad my bro decided to abandon Mechwarrior franchise.

So.. werewolf would you tell us your sons nickname and age so we (the mature part of community) can watch our language when he is playing.

For what it's worth, I see (and do) more trash talking in a single game of DotA than in over a year I've played MWLL.

I have to say that it's incredibly rare that I see immature and offensive chat coming through in-game.  I think the last time I recall witnessing anything was back when MWO was still sending out invite keys.

Maybe the fact that I'm almost never online on the weekends has something to do with it.

I know one or two players (mostly one) who can be counted on talking shit when something goes wrong for him. Others, mostly the harrassed, chime in, then. Otherwise, its mostly ok when I play.
Watch "Save the Supers" you will get some laughs in.

Just put something opaque over the chat area if you're that bothered, though you might as well wrap them in cotton wool and make sure they wear their specialist gas masks on the toilet a well imo.

Words are just words in my view, by doing this you're actually empowering such stuff rather than dismissing it out of hand, but hey they're not my kids, so don't think I'm trying to tell you how to raise them or anything hilarious like that.

Ps, likely best to get them to dc if you see me join, I do love a colourful ramble or 7.

No problem, Werewolf. Good luck with all that, and building his computer.
