A question for the wandering samurai dev team
« on: March 05, 2013, 04:03:01 PM »
I was curious to know has the dev team ever thought about doing a RTS version of MWLL, something that's similar to mechcommander?  I know mechwarrior tactics is under development, but it's turn based, which is kind of a turn off to the hardcore mechcommander players.  There seems to still be a pretty nice crowd that's interested in this type of mechwarrior game.  I know there is a very small team of players right now that have modded a single player version of mechcommander 2, but it doesn't have any kind of multi-player support or updated graphics.

Oh I would dig that...

Pity I have absolutely no "game development" knowledge, or I would gladly begin this project myself! ^^
I do volunteer for beta alphatesting as soon as development begins!  8)

One of the developers, Sannayasi (AFAIK), is/was working on a Crysis RTS. Looked pretty good from the video I saw of it.

A new developer would need to secure the rights to make a non-commercial RTS based on MechWarrior, which sure as hell isn't happening when someone is already making a (presumably P2W) RTS based on MechWarrior.

Great... It's like the new Sim City all over again: Franchises are being ruined by squeezing it for all of the money it's worth, and making it P2W. Whelp, at least the Descent game series is being spared this treatment by falling into the background static back in 1999.

You'll never get a straight honest answer from those guys, and you know the reason why.

There have been no talks of a Mechwarrior RTS.

A couple reasons:

1. It's a grand undertaking I don't think many of us want to engage again.
2. We learned a valuable life lesson about what happens when you use someone else's IP.

Thanks for the response defender, sorry to hear that's not something that can be done.  It sucks because you guys made arguably the best Mechwarrior game ever.  Mechcommander was always my favorite amongst all the mech games, would really like to see someone make a true RTS Mechwarrior, not this Mechwarrior Tactics, F2P, Turn-based stuff.

They are my reasons, but they're not just mine. They've been shared in many a discussion.
Most of us would like to have continued on with this project despite closing up shop.

In terms of the many discussions I had with other developers on the team (long-time ones at least) about starting a new game, there is no reason to start work based on someone else's intellectual property without securing a license or you get another MWO. If you're going to make a game it's going to be indie and it's also your own IP. If you're going to spend 3-6 years making something, it'd better be profitable without being undermined by licensing issues and corporate bureaucracy.

Lesson learned. If you're going to take the time to make something special, make an attempt to reciprocate some financial gain from the endeavor.

I mirror the opinions that Defender has put forth, and I know that Toth also shares this sentiment.

If/when I work on another project, it won't be an established IP that has the potential to be in any sort of dispute over usage.  To put it another way: "OH hell no".  Early on in the MWLL project we watched the Crysis "Jurassic Park" mod meet its untimely end.  See also: Halo RTS.

If the dev team, or members of it, decide to embark on another project, I think I'm not the only one that would be ecstatic to see a thread about it on this forum. Not that it wouldn't end up here sooner or later if it's still up.

Well, I can't speak for the rest of the team, but I have a new project (using our own IP) in the works with a couple of my friends... and we could use some concept artists and whatnot.

  • Enquire with MS with state of MechCommander IP
  • Acquire funding/backing
  • Purchase rights to IP
  • Make game
  • Sell game
  • ? ? ?
  • Profit

As easy as that
