You're assuming that there is a scrolling map for the light mech with ERPPC to continue backing up on.  At the end of the day there is always a map edge or line that you cannot cross in a Tactical Withdrawal.
No, it depends how you play. Some people just keep adding map sheets. Obviously, it also involves subtracting map sheets not being played on, but makes for a lot more realistic fight.

What I meant by Tactical Withdrawal is that when you commit your assault mechs it is usually against a static defense and the defenders can only retreat so far, or you use them for defense and the assault mechs act like deterents against enemies getting too close.  Simply sending an Annihilator or any other assault mech out on recon duty or a cross country patrol is just asking for it to get hammered on by a Vulcan and it's AC/2 or a Pike support vehicle with it's triple AC/2 turret.  I guess a Mauler would be pretty good on it's own since it is armed with all long range weapons, but it's 11.5 tons of armor and XL engine mean its begging to be salvaged.
