Animations in Mechwarrior living legends

I always wondered if animations could be randomly generated, or if muzzle flashes could be randomly generated, so that there would be little repetition in animations that could become extremely boring to see. Neverwinter nights 2 for example has about 2-4 animations during combat, to the point where it is tedious.

It is possible... just rather wasteful of valuable GPU work that would be far better served elsewhere.

The engine has a very good animation graph that I'm sure will be put to good use. NWN2 is a very different style of game and isn't a very good comparison.

More importantly, those effects are not animations. Animations do need to be predictable, and NWN had multiple, because you weren't controlling individual attacks, you didn't NEED to expect a certain animation from a certain input, as long as the effects were the same. FPSs can't really do that.

The animation graph system built into Crysis is pretty cool, but it is very application specific. There is one graph and is used to control all the "bipeds" so humans and aliens alike. Weapons and, more importantly, mechs cannot use it.

All I am worried about is maintaining the fluidity of movement that we see in the vids and in a bit in Mechwarrior 4. I hate games where mechs do 90 degree sharp turns, like mechcommander 2, it's ridiculous.

Let me assure you by saying that our 'mechs certainly don't turn on a dime. Though I kind of wish they did... >_>
