While I'd love to say we're the first to provide a dynamic visual weapon system, AT:1 and Battletech Simulator beat us to the punch. It's just not too many people either know or play either.

Actually, I'd like to point out that an old school game called Earth Siege did it a long time ago back in 1995. Much like Mech Warrior, Earth Siege has it's own universe about Giant robots fighting it out with similar weapons :).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earthsiege

True, but EarthSeige lacked the immersive storyline, this is what keeps Mechwarrior (Battletech) players coming back for more. Course,I did like roller skating around in EarthSeige.
Too true, and Earthsiege also provides a greater depth of damaged/destroyed components than mechwarrior ever did!

Finally, a customization system that makes sense! Way to embrace the omni concept MW LL, this is mint.

Hey, I was thinking more about this system, and I was wondering if you were planning on including attachments to allow players to scale down weapon slots.  While you could cover this with different pods, I think having an alternative could be fun even if it really only affects how the 'Mechs look.
I think thats what the different pods are for.
Replace pod A with x slots, with pod B with y slots. Limited by weight. With each pod being sized for the slots it provides.

I love this customization system. simple, and it will actually SHOW the changes. awesome.

Also, wheres video 3? :(
* ilkhan falls to his knees and begs for video #3.
I was saying on the IRC that you should just record 5-10 (or more!) minutes of you devs playing, in whatever mechs/vehs you have in the game, as is. But I was told that people would bite your heads off for showing stuff thats not perfect. :/

I know this is possible in the main pods, but I was thinking of using it for either giving your ride an artistic touch if you don't like the look of some weapon pod, or letting you scale down the hard mounts to free up weight.  I know there are some instances in canon variants where a laser or autocannon is downgraded to make room for a bigger main weapon system somewhere else.  In the case of the Catapult, this would allow you to downgrade the bank of 4 medium lasers to 4 small lasers to free up some weight.

I doubt the pods have any weight to them, for customization purposes. Change one pod to a single small and you'll free up weight for an assault pod elsewhere. The pods aren't really a limiting factor, they are just to ensure that the visuals line up.

That wasn't what I meant.  There are some hard mounts in addition to the flexible pod mounts which is where you could apply this to save weight with smaller weapons.  The video talks about these at about the 4 minute mark.

Ah, I understand now.
That's a good question. My read is the barrel is just attached to the front of the mount, which is just a flat round surface on the mech. I expect it might look rather odd to have a small laser attached where a a gauss is supposed to be mounted. Might be a ton of flat space around the barrel.

That flat space is impossible to have because the final game won't let you mount the wrong size weapons because it would look ridiculous (there was a shot of this in the video).  That is why I was thinking of making a piece that is basically a cone with the point cut off so you could scale down the area to hold a smaller weapon.  This would solve the fitting problem, and I don't think that being able to use a smaller weapon will be unbalancing.
