Edge Online: State of the Modding Scene
« on: October 21, 2008, 10:49:37 PM »
I think it's valuable to glean insight into what modding is like these days as a lot of people think it's as simple as changing a value or inserting a model. Mods CAN be a simple weapon modification or a total conversion, but with the latter it can become a big production.. much like MW:LL. While we're not talked about in depth other than a short insert, I always think it's valuable that the community recognize what it takes behind the scenes. Total Conversion mods these days do end up being like full development studios and we have been no stranger to people getting hired because of their talent.

Interesting read, thanks for sharing.

Also, I usually only move topics that totally don't fit, mostly those by a certain dev.

That's a perspective I have never taken while looking at the overall modding scene. I've never thought about the implications of mod teams losing members to professional companies. Cool article.

Yep, they talked about "using crysis to revive the mechwarrior franchise"

a.k.a. MW:LL.

Interesting, but as any verteran of moddb should know, its a real mixed pot of a community.

Trying to looks at the whole thing at once is a mind boggling thing, but i really do believe that some of the old innocence of modding that you might have seen five years ago has gone. Modding is too complicated nowadays to just be soemthing everyone does for a labour of live, not if you want a high quality mod.

Ofcourse i am not talking about the MWLL team, everyone knows how much love there is for the battletech universe, but you guys are the happy face of the community, buckets of talent and the best intentions, plus you know know all the legal stuff aswell.

As for the other end of the moddign comunity, the people who do it for fun who aren't very good at it, they should keep going just to get better. Similarly, if anyone has been disenchanted by bad mods which have crashed their computer then they shouldn't stop looking for good ones, because there are enough good mods out there to to last everyone a lifetime.

Thought-Provoking Article.
At some point, it seems like the only thing a Total-Conversion Mod ISN'T doing is creating the Engine.

Everything else is done in-house, especially if you want to stand-tall and not relate to the original source material.

Page 2, to make a Battlestar Galactica game that’s actually good, for example, or revive the MechWarrior franchise through Crysis

Yup, that's it. It's a short reference, but hey, any reference is better than no reference!

It might send some more traffic this way, which should be good for the community (or it may just send more people to aks "when will it be finished?" questions...).
