Just don't shake it too much :-) Looks like a badboy. 15k RPM, I personally prefer the bigger space, but having a fast monster like that as a gaming drive is something into which I should look. Is this your first fast HD? I've never had one before, let me know if they are worth it!

I don't get it. It's a 15k RPM SAS drive... what's the big deal? Hope you're not gonna try to plug it into your SATA...

Serial Attached SCSI. I love it when they put acronyms in acronyms. It's basically the next version of SCSI. You can use SATA drives on the SAS controller in a pinch, but it doesn't work the other way.

Yeah, they call those TLAs, or two-level acronyms/abbreviations. Related to, but not quite the same as, recursive acronyms such as PHP or GNU.

Such geekery hath arisen from the programming profession.

And the military.  Can't forget them and their obsessions with acronyms.

I asked before about the benefits of a raptor-type drive, does anyone recommend it? Is the lack of space and possibly higher cost well worth the performance?

velociraptor?
faster spin, shorter access times.
that's about all the advantage you get.
same as with a "raid"0 array.
but those two stack, so if you combine them, you get much faster response times inside your system.
but the data-transfer does not get much faster with only high RPM

Reminds me of those acronyms within an acronym.

They're called "recursive acronyms". Some popular ones are PHP: PHP Hypertext Preprocessor and GNU: GNU is Not Unix.

The faster the drive spins, the faster the head can potentially be over the sector it's looking for. Assuming the heads also move faster, this results in a lower seek time. Solid state drives are even better at this because there are no moving parts. The access to Flash memory is on the order of microseconds instead of mere milliseconds like even the fastest hard drives. The transfer rates should be pretty close as those are generally bus limited, assuming the data on the hard drive is sequential, of course.
