First Person Combat Mode?
« on: December 17, 2008, 11:56:21 PM »
Hi guys new question,

I noticed in all of the screen shots, that all of the combat shots are taken from a third person view (including the latest one). Will there be a cockpit view?

Thanks a lot!  I love MWLL!

*Most* of the shots are taken from an outside perspective because they made use of Crysis spectator mode in free view.
The actual game is to be experienced in first person of course with a cockpit and HUD elements.

I really hope that there is no 3rd person mode available. While it gave some advantages in MW4 by increasing visibility and making targeting and maneuvering easier. I also felt like it was sort of cheating because a  Mech pilot would not be able to see from that perspective. It also detracted from the immersion for the same reason so I seldom used it which often put me at a disadvantage.

I'm pretty sure either third person has been removed or it has been limited so that your combat capabilities while in 3rd person are extremely limited.

There will not be a third person view available for the beta release of the mod IIRC

I used third person almost exclusively in MW4.  If I had to play in a league match that forced first person, it was annoying, but it didn't really affect my performance at all - the tool that cried for first person because he thought it would level the playing field was usually even shittier in first person, so it worked out in the end.

I always prefer giving people the option.  Of course, any game I've ever played that had third person available, it invariably has a bunch of tools that cry about it constantly.  As if third person was removed, they'd suddenly be the best in the game.  /yawn

Hmm...anyone notice from the bitterness that I've spent quite a bit of time debating third person over the years?  :)

League generally use First Person because Third Person allows you to see over obstacles in your way, taking away a serious tactical element in the game.

As stated, third person views for Mechs will not be available in our Release, these are merely our Debug Views for development and testing purposes.

A couple reasons we didn't incorporate third-person views is because it severely undermines the specific advantages that Battlearmor have, like not being seen on Radar, not being seen under the legs of mechs.

Also, we have a distaste for third-person in regards to the "MicroMachine" feeling it gives you, as stated by Kami. It makes the mechs feel less like simluated, multi-meter machines of war and more like toys with a god camera.

As if those two reasons weren't pervasive enough, it also takes away from people's ability to manipulate the environment in ways which they would not be able to from within the cockpit. Seeing over ridges, from behind buildings, and so forth.

I know it's a scary thought for some, but you might actually have to SEE your enemy face to face to fight them, rather than get the jump on them from a safe position with an altered perspective.

I always considered using Third Person to gain an advantage to be a tactical element.

In my experience, it's generally the lousier players that want to prohibit third person.  They get beat by superior players, so they want to take away whatever tactical elements they possibly can.  I don't think it's a conscious decision on their point, but more of a subconcious reaction.  It's only human.

In MW4, the worst players in the game would always want to play Pea Soup Fog on Dustbowl with First Person only - thereby removing as many tactical elements as possible.  They would invariable take ~70 tonners loaded with autocannons running in passive radar mode.  They thought by breaking the match down to be as simplistic as possible, that they would have their best chance at winning.  Of course, they were wrong.

To me, it is simply a matter of immersion in the game. I want to enhance the illusion that I actually am sitting in the cockpit of a 30FT tall fighting machine from the future. I don't think that my opponent should be able to see me approaching from behind a wall because his camera is positioned 10Ft higher in the air than mine is. (unless of course it is on top of a stalk, periscope or antenna which would be somewhat visible to me). I remember a time in MW4 when it was all the rage to equip a Ryoken with JJ and ERLarge Lasers and hide behind walls in 3RD person mode and pot shot approaching enemy mechs. I did it but I always felt it was a cheap tactic and the enjoyment was quick to fade. As far as I was concerned it was just an exploit. For those reasons I am glad this will be 1ST person only.

By the way, if I have to be a "tool" then I want to be a Hammer!

The problam with seeing third person as a tactical element, is that in real life it is some what unrealistic, atleast for the pilot in the Mech. Because to get that kind of view in real life you would have to, for example, stand on the roof of you car... as your driving it at the same time.

The reason I, and most otheres here, want the game to be in 1st person view is not to screw with people who want's to use 3rd person view. But rather because it is realistic, because you don't have a Mech pilot standing on top of your mech as you pilot it, he sit's inside it. If you got someone standing on your mech you probably need to duck and roll... :D

I will say that I do use the 3rd person view in most games that are built around using it, or that seem very weired playing in 1st person view. But games like Crysis, or Far Cry or other normal FPS games, I almost always play in 1st person.

I would have to say that the "Tool" that called the other guy a "Tool" should stick to mech4 if third person is so damned important.

The whole friggin purpose of a simulator game is to " simulate " as closely as possible to the actual experience.

Not to create a console gaming environment.

If you want console gaming experience then stick to your friggin Xbox TOOL!

I noticed in all of the screen shots, that all of the combat shots are taken from a third person view (including the latest one).

That one is actually taken in first person view. If you read the description, the 'mech you actually see is a lancemate, not the 'mech from which the screenshot was taken. You can't see the cockpit of the 'mech the person is in because it's zoomed, (and they possibly haven't implemented it yet). The way the shot was taken, it looks like that standard "over the shoulder" 3rd person view, but that's just because the other mech happened to be standing there.
