RI.P. game developers
« on: December 20, 2008, 10:46:42 PM »
It's not the best time to be employed in the gaming industry it seems.
Below are just the ones I wrote news about in the past 2 weeks. If you know more - feel free to add them.

  • EA, Sony and THQ announce massive layoffs.
  • Aspyr (among other things: Guitar Hero III) lays off about one third of its staff.

Many veterans and some fresh blood will simply disappear forever.
Among them:

  • Free Radical Design
  • Factor 5

    Hardware:
  • Abit

    On the brink:
  • Midway
  • SCi Entertainment / Eidos Interactive

Can't believe that happened to Eidos Interactive. They used to be THE skittt. Of course, they are outdated now, compared to Electronic Arts, etc. But man, back then, they were huge. At least I highly believe so.

Gaming industry has been outperforming most, though, or so the news reports would have you believe.

Numbers for quite some of them looked pretty bad indeed though.

I still can't believe Free Radical died.  Have you seen the concept art for TS4?  Looks sweet!  And time splitters were great games, the kind of games they actually knew how to pull off well!  Even IF Haze did suck massive balls.

I mean, this is one of the more memorable moments in a game I've played (at around 1:40):

You literally had four copies of yourself completing one "puzzle" at the same time through a timewarp, crazy.

Not to mention the slap-stick funny cutscenes:

I wonder how Interplay will manage through this time of bad economy. They where raised from the dead about 2 years ago I think, and they have been officially back since about 2007 I think. Seems like they picked a bad time to be resurrected in.

I hope they manage to stay alive though... because I WANT!! my Fallout mmo! :D

Since when is money an accurate measure of success?

Even if some game studios are being shut down, and people are getting layed of, it is not as bad as it is in other industry's. Because even if people do cut down on spending, and/or earn less money, enjoyment is one of the things that people still try to atleast use some of their money on. And games are one of those things. I know I do that when I don't have so much money to use, try and make sure I can possibly afford atleast one game every now and then.

Good Riddance to EA! I enjoy their games, but those people working at EA who have been laid off will be able to put their talent to much better use somewhere else.

Money keeps businesses afloat... last I checked that's what this thread was about.
