if you use nightvision!

ok electric six lyrics aside,

are we going to have any nightvision capability to the vehicles?  or any other vision modes?

yes. light amplification seems to be a sure deal
'any kind of discussion of randomness ALWAYS WILL EQUATE to being able to critically hit a mech's reactor by firing a micro beam laser while facing 80 degrees to the side, shooting the ground, which would cause a random explosion which would randomly crit his entire team's reactors which would randomly cause the server itself to explode which would randomly generate a strange quark which would randomly hit the earth and randomly randomness randomfapp the shit fapp random!'

Yep of course. The only unknown we have atm is giving it to the player all the time or having them purchase them. So far the design is to give all players light amp in suits as well as mechs

i'd prefer real LIGHTS to be pod-mountable, instead of light amp for all . . but i guess the latter will be easier and more fair? O.o

It's also the 31st century.  Considering now in the 21st century Night Vision is standard issue for night-time endevors, I think it would be a little silly to scrap NV in favor of a big "I'm over here!" light on the mech.

i'd rather not have nightvision be something that requires cost and space.  Mechwarrior 4's 1 ton mech sized NV goggles was just silly, especially considering all the sensors already mounted on bt units

just one thing though, please for the love of god, whatever route you go with nightvision, please, please don't do the horizontal lines that crysis has it its nv.  you can hardly see anything at range with those things ruining any definition.  Those horizontal lines are not even present in present gen nightvion anymore, and even less likely in the 31st century.

as for floodlights, they'd probably be more handy in spotting elementals since nightvision doesn't create any shadows and offers less contrast than something brightly lit.  also great for light blinding people at close range

any chance of getting some kind of heat sensitive view someday? i remember from the books that at least mechs could switch to some sort of heat detectable view.

aah, it would be cool if the Mechwarrior 2 things were in . .
MAD, Thermo-Optis, Computer-Enhanced, LowLight . . but eh, it can wait

Such a cool question! I have actually done ALOT of r&d with this. You wont see it in MWLL initial but i'd love to get something like this added in the future. Other guys have done the same in CryENGINE2 very cool stuff here's some links:

didnt knew this is such a matter of coding but it looks quite tough indeed  ;)
always loved it when mechs were hiding in the water or in chasms to hide their thermal footprint in the books, would be realy cool if this would fit into MWLL aswell.

oh damn, if mwll could duplicate what that guy did in that thread, that'd be awesome.  Best part is that the problem of not having skin show up as being warmer than clothes properly doesn't even apply to us, since everyone is encased in armor of one type or another.

The only issues would be to have hot mechs show up brighter, and having weapons fire and impacts show up bright.  Though, if my understanding is correct the modified nightvision shader that looks like IR that the guy did still works off how things would light up in regular nightvision since all he really did was change the colors. which means light sources and areas that catch more light in nightvision show up as being hot when using the IR gradient.  In that way, explosions, weapon fire, and whatnot would still show up as hot in the IR vision with probably no further modding needed since they already give off light.  Having variable amounts of IR glow on vehicles and players dependant on heat levels however would require some work.

All very interesting, and would be so cool to switch between direct TV, FLIR and NV modes all slaved to the same button (Like Predator-vision from the movies), like this idea a lot.

Love it if 'mechs that ran their heat up suddenly became visible on sensors if they yellow lined.  All sounds great for a complex Electronic Warfare model.  Watching this space with interest :)

I was wondering, during the night/day cycle are there any planets that get so dark it requires you to use night vision or some sort of image enhancement?  Like a map that is so pitch black there is no way to see without something?  I would really like that.  Gives image enhancement more of a purpose instead of 'Well, this helps out a little bit...' that we get in most games.

to me the nightvision we have now is just a different type of normal vision. in crysis I didn't see nightvision useful and mwll i don't either. for me it has no advatage over regular vision whatsoever- it doesn't help me see things better at all.... but i guess everyone is different, if your favorite colour is green perhaps you will find a use for it.....
