Omnimech vs Standard
« on: May 17, 2007, 03:59:40 PM »
Hi folks,

As I've not seen any pictures yet, can I ensure these Mechs are definitely on the 'to do' list? I ask because as far as I know, these Mechs are definitely 'iconic' to the Battletech universe, and if you've not got them down, I'm sure you'll end up with a zillion people asking wtf they are. :)

Clan
===
Timberwolf
Mad Dog
Dire Wolf
Jenner IIC
Warhawk
Rifleman IIC (Maybe)

Inner Sphere
========
Hatchetman
Raven
Uziel
Battlemaster

Also, while I'm here (is this now a suggestion, or a question? I'm not sure! :D) what plans exist to differentiate between a standard Mech and an Omnimech? Also, which naming convention do you plan to hold to? Only Mechwarrior 2 of the PC games has previously used the Clan naming scheme, but I suppose it depends whether you're aiming for authenticity, or to get as many gamers in without confusion. I can already picture a horde of MW4 / Console gamers saying "LOLZ N00BS, ITS A MAD CAT!11one" ;)

Lastly, while I'm at it, please God, make the Mad Dog like it should, not the awful Mechwarrior 4 arms that looked like ER PPC's, but weren't. :)

We plan to use both naming conventions. You'll see the Clan names while playing Clan and IS names when playing IS. Isn't that how it was in BT anyway :D.

LOL! Talk to Crim about that. Even though the rest of the staff here loves the old school arms, he likes the cheap pea shooter guns instead and is really pulling for it.

I also vastly prefer the Mw4 aesthetics.  Even the Vulture arms.  The only reason I'd say to keep the original arms if you're playing a Vulture with the primary loadout (LPL and MPL in each arm).  Make the weapons match the mech, or the mech the weapons, whatever.  On the flip side if multiple models for the same mech aren't possible then I would definitely prefer the Mw4 arms as they graphically lend themselves to multiple energy and projectile weapon appearances much better than two big long tubes poking out of the elbow.

I see nothing in this Theard about OMNI VS Standard mechs...

Clan
===
Omni - Timberwolf
Omni - Mad Dog
Omni - Dire Wolf
Standard -Jenner IIC
Omni - Warhawk
Standard - Rifleman IIC (Maybe)

Inner Sphere
========
Standard - Hatchetman
Standard - Raven
Standard - Uziel
Standard - Battlemaster

 Where Omni-Mech showed there real power is in the repair bay, Where it takes 3 to 8 weeks replace a arm or reconfiger a Standard mech the OMNI-Mech it can be done in as little as 1 to 7 days this is what made the Omni-Mech so Powerful.

I think the common thought that most people have is that all Clan Mechs are Omni and IS mechs are all Standard . No need to get all technical on us Wolf ;).

Not all clan  mechs are omni mechs though.  But the point that he was making is that there could be a number of "standared" omni modules that could be used for different mechs.  Ie. A arm with a erppc and a light laser that could be fitted to any appropriate omni mech.  Im my opinion however I believe that the clans had standardized omnimech modules FOR THE PARTICULAR MECH, not universal modules.  So a Diashi would have a number of different modules to choose from.  A mech tech couldnt just pick a omni module off of a mech and put it on a different mech all togetehr, it would have to be the same kind of mech.

This would be a interesting way to let players customize omni mechs

Might be an idea to have omni pods restricted to weight classes.
So you could take the arm of a MadCat and stick it on OmniMechs weighing between 60 and 75 tons and so on.

The lower the weight class, the smaller they are and vice versa.
Could lead to some interesting Mech constructions ... Frankenstein Mechs hehe ^^

Symmetrical modules, if considered, might cause problems with game balance
i.e. ShadowCat equipped with 2 Gauss Rifles.
