HOTAS Support
« on: February 01, 2009, 10:49:46 PM »
Ok, I'm really old school.  I started playing Mechwarrior online back in 1996 with MW2: Mercenaries - so I've been around for a while.  The one thing I never had the ability to do over the years - MW2 - MW4 was to pilot a mech with a full HOTAS setup.

Well, I have one now - in fact, I've gone so far as to dropping over 1000.00 into a fully modded HOTAS Cougar for Falcon 4.0, EECH, IL-2, LOMAC, DCS: Blackshark, etc., and love it.  I also have Track IR 4.  What I'm most interested in is - will Living Legends offer full HOTAS Support...

i.e. Virtual World Tesla Pod level support - pedals for turning, throttle for moving speed, stick axis for turning the turret., etc?

The second I suppose is Track IR (I'm dreaming with this one)?

I have a full 3D Display setup with depth perception using Fresnel technology, so I'm looking forward to taking Mechwarrior yet again, to the next level.

Not right now. We are toying with releasing a version eventually with full TrackIR support, but right now, we're really bouncing off the limitations of the ModSDK. It would really need modification of the input system to be able to pull off stuff like that properly.

You would have to have a mech where view inside was the head of the person for the track ir to work. So it would be like looking around the inside of the tank but yet still able to drive and turn the turret and work elevation. A little bit complex.

Not really - if I can fly Enemy Engaged (modded) helo sim, or DCS: Black Shark, or even Falcon 4.0 proficiently, I'd say it wouldn't be hard at all.

I ment complex for devs at the moment. There busy just getting the other kinks out.. I would love to look around in the mech or vehicles at montors or out windows and still be able to control the vehicle like in flight sims.

Oh, yeah, I totally know what you mean.  I'm just happy that they are making a new Mechwarrior after all these years!!  :) :) :) :)

If someone wants to provide the team with some pods to test with, I'm sure we can integrate support for the final release.

Been Price Quoting some small 6x5x5 plastic Garden Sheds to convert. Is that pod enough? hehe.. Actually it was something I was looking into to build a simulator into. Just frame the inside into a cockpit. Plus if wife kicks me outside for it I can live in it too.  ;)

Hehehe I wish I could. ;)  In the flight sim community, many of us have spent thousands building our own cockpits.

But, for HOTAS support, all we'd need really is selectable axis support - i.e. being able to define up to 8 axes in the MW:LL Controller menu.  Digital or Analog axes - i.e. X, Y, Z etc...

Stick up down left right
Throttle back, forward
Pedals left right
Pedals toe brake right in/out
Pedals toe brake left in/out
Rotary 1
Rotary 2
Microstick axes (though usually the microstick will emulate the mouse)

The rest is basically programmable in our HOTAS software, as long as we can assign a keyboard command to it (any combination of buttons) or a USB code to it.  So really we just need a way to assign the axes in the game menu to functions.

Yeah I was working with Xpadder myself so i can get dual joysticks to work as well as pedals.. Pricing went down on joysticks so I may grab a couple..

I was digging around and found X keys.. http://www.xkeys.com/xkeys.php

I like there setups in that I could buy different keyboards, create paneled sections in different locations in cockpit and create my own printable keys.

The Multi axis support in game from several input devices is something I hope can be remedied.

Maybe the DEVs can support this controller to run the user controlled cranes for changing out the weapons on the 'Mechs.

And THEN, they can code support for the in-game monorail system to use this:
