For door #83 in MWLL's advent calendar, opening on February 21st, we're revisiting an already familiar place with an old friend around: today's screenshot shows a Clan's Blood Asp firing its two Gauss rifles. Enjoy!

Funny effect for a guass rifle, i always imagined it in my head to be more like a white shock wave sort of steak-in-the-air rather than having sparks and a line of bright blue circles.

Cool picture anyways.

Those Gauss effects sure are pretty. You guys really are doing a great job with the weapon effects in general.

Looks sexy! Though I always imagined the MW4 style gauss effect to be more fitting in a rail gun...

I guess its similar technology?

Who cares that looks badass!!

I would suspect that guass rifles are similar to today's main battletank Sabot rounds being fire. They are so fast that you do not actually see the rounds per say and their effects, though a guass rifle may have an effect when the round is fired and all the energy is being used. You can trace a sabot round through the air, but you do not actually see the air being disturbed, that process is too quick for our eye's. Now for a game, the devs would have to make an effect so you could see what was being fired at you. So in reality, who know's because we do not have real 'guass rifles' like in battletech!

fapp reality. In reality you wouldn't see a laser , have no sound in space and so on.
Real but boring. By the way ... 'Mechs aren't real.

Agreed.  I thought those effects were the PPCs, not gauss.  The floating donuts definitely look like...well I would have said an energy weapon, but I can't imagine any weapon ever making that.  The new little Star Wars Clone Wars cartoon (yes, I Tivo that and I'm 38) had something similar for an ion cannon, but who knows.  I would think that a gauss cannon would be similar to the MW4 thunderbolt missile, but much faster (basically a white-hot streak).

Edit:  Actually in rethinking it I am thinking that "donut" is supposed to be something like a...shockwave?  It probably looks better in motion.  In a still shot it just looks like someone got carried away with the wave effect, making it look more like an energy weapon.  It would be cool if the effect was slightly noticable as more of a transparent distorted shimmer, IMO.

If it were a transparent distorted shimmer wouldn't people get it mistaked for a PPC?

That's what the PPC looks like? I thought the PPC was more like a bluish white lightning...

Its the Gauss.

The PPC's in MPBT:3025 had a nice lighting effect for its version. I never cared for the MW4 effect as it didn't seem to convey the power that was behind it.
